I purchased A24s Babygirl, as their releases are among the more interesting and creative to come along.
The marketing placed Nicole Kidman in the performance of her career, in a romantic / "erotic" thriller for the ages.
Not so fast.
When I think of that genre of thriller (occasionally noir - Double Indemnity) like Body Heat, Fatal Attraction or Basic Instinct, I talking about gripping, sometimes of of your seat thrillers.
What Babygirl gives us are two people who fall into a contrived relationship. One of them totally one-dimensional and unlikable, and the other - who should have been a lot smarter - carrying so much psychological baggage that the plot - along with much of the acting (I blame the director) becomes overwrought.
As far as plot and why she gets involved, we're almost in a Psycho - "don't go down into the fruit cellar" category, which places Kidman's character right at the edge of questionable institutionalization, instead of heading up a huge company.
I actually did like one secondary performance, which rang true - that of young Esther MacGregor, who plays one of Kidman and Banderas' daughters. Her dad should be justifiably proud.
As a 4k UHD disc, color is interesting, but as far as 4k-ness, there isn't that much, even though shot with an Arri Alexa mini and completed as 4k data. The Dolby Vision helps here.
The track is an interesting Dolby Atmos mix, that at times easily fits into the "lease-breaker" category.
Sorry. I tried to like this, but am not a fan.
Packaging is typical A24, always something different - in this case a heavy paper disc holder (case) that fits into a heavy paper sleeve. It also comes with half a dozen postcardy things, the purpose of which escapes me.
Image (Dolby Vision)
Forensic - 10
NSD - 10
Audio – 10 (Dolby Atmos)
Pass / Fail – Pass
Plays nicely with projectors - Yes
Makes use of and works well in 4k - 7
Worth your attention - No
Slipcover rating - Steelbook
Looks like Film - Had me wondering for a bit
RAH
