If a list were created of all the films best suited for a 4k release, Lewis Teague's Alligator would probably not appear.
But leave it to Scream Factory to take a fan favorite - my son used to rent it on VHS - and give it the treatment that every fan might only dream about.
Having sampled the new 4k, I found it to generally look superb - with only minor instances of color being a bit off. Image is stable. Grain is in one's face. I thought it appeared to have been shot in 16mm, but apparently not.
Sitting at a proper viewing distance, everything works as it should, with grain nicely homogenized into the overall image, and not a problem in sight.
But wait! There's more!
In league with TV offers of steak-knives, you'll receive, not one, but two versions of the film - all scanned in 4k, and with the theatrical version as a 4k UHD disc.
Different extras will be found on both the 4k and Blu-ray variants, with the third disc - the television version, created from the OCN and an IP.
Bottom line. Here's a fan favorite of a film that probably has no relevance to 4k, but created as such, for fans, by Scream Factory.
Those fans had better come out and support the release, if they want more of the same. And it can be yours for a savings of $35 over the current DVD.
Image – 4.8
Audio – 5 (DTS-HD MA Monaural)
Pass / Fail – Pass
Plays nicely with projectors - Yes
Upgrade from DVD - Yes
Makes use of and works well in 4k - 3.75
