Anyone seeking a wonderfully researched historical drama about knighthood and the wonderful sport of jousting need not apply here, as you'll find a world akin to Marie Antoinette's sneakers.

What you will find in Brian Helgeland's A Knight's Tale is an era-bending frothy entertainment, that is also not studiously based upon the works of Chaucer.

As released in 4k UHD by Columbia / Sony, it's a wonderful example of what filmed entertainment created as the 21st century arrived can look like for home theater consumption.

Shot in S35, this is visually a gorgeous release, with a new Dolby Atmos track presumably created from the original SDDS mix.

I just found a copy of the Extended Version on DVD after a long search, so of course there's a wonderful new 4K with both versions, all the DVD extras that weren't on the previous Blu-Ray, and some new extras in a lovely steelbook package. Of course there is. Anyhow, the Extended Version will now and forever be my preferred version of "A Knight's Tale".

I don't quite know how they did it, but this is such a likable film, watching it is a real feel good experience...& the pop song don't jar at all (they work a treat).

So I took some time this evening to watch the extended cut. Meh. I thought the added scenes ruined the pacing of the film and really didn’t add anything the viewer needed to know to enjoy the movie. The worst for me was actually Chaucer’s speech at the stocks because it completely takes the air out of Prince Edward’s scene which immediately follows it and is more meaningful. In my opinion, it was wise to cut the scenes they did to edit down to the theatrical version. I realize I’m in the minority here. I’m glad I finally saw the extended cut but I’ll never watch it again and will always go to the theatrical when I watch this.
