I don't have reference materials handy, but as I recall it was Renata Adler, who in her review of Bullitt said simply "Bullitt is a terrific movie."

I've always thought of that quote and the simple message that it sends.

After screening Columbia's new DVD of James Bridge's The China Syndrome, I'm comfortable in taking her lead.

The China Syndrome is a terrific movie.

And it is beautifully presented on DVD.

Great feature presentation of an important film, which has lost none of its power after two decades, and may send an even more important message today.

The blend of television news reporting, big business and politics has not changed. Everyone involved is still attempting to get some message across.

Mine is simple, especially if you've never seen it.

Go out and get a copy of The China Syndrome.

Why?

Because The China Syndrome is a terrific movie and a great DVD.

And is Jack Lemmon ever missed.

I am in the middle of watching this right now, taking a break. IMO Jack Lemmon is the best thing about this good movie. What is interesting to me, working in the nuclear biz, is how little has changed in so many ways...I started in the biz the year this movie was made. People in our society can't live without their electricty (or oil for that matter), and until they can, this movie will have currency.

I loved it when I first saw it and I still love it today. Those are wisely chosen words, Richard. Sometimes films cannot be described so succinctly, but The China Syndrome is one that can. Just a terrific movie.

Just spooky that this film was released only 3 weeks prior to the Three Mile Island meltdown. Talk about topical.

I was wondering about the timing of this issue. I also picked up this DVD based on Lemmon's unforgetable performance (a douple dip for me). He has so often been overlooked for awards -- I suspect because his quality was consistently high and so was the expectation the public had of him. He is indeed dearly missed.

This is the only movie in my fifty or so years of attending movies that caused me to stand up and shout. I know, it sounds like an embarrassing reaction. But there is a moment toward the end, after many minutes of almost unbearable suspense, when I just rose to my feet and screamed, "No-o-o!" (you probably know which moment if you have seen the film). No other film in my life has elicited this reaction from me. And it was 90% due to Jack Lemmon's exemplary performance (his best, in my opinion). A special edition of this nerve-wracking film is most welcome.

Without researching the issue...does anybody know if this is a new transfer, or is it the same as the first DVD release?

it is a new transfer- it was noted elsewhere that the VOB files are dated Sept, 2004.

Too bad they didnt spiff up the SE of EASY RIDER-the transfer/files there are the same as on the previous disc-June 1999

I didn't think the 1999 transfer of Easy Rider was bad to begin with.
