I'm going to repeat myself somewhat and simply say that unlike many older Hollywood films in which the extra resolution reveals much of the artifice, the increased clarity of THE THIN MAN Blu-ray increases the greatness and beauty of this film, making me now realize, along with Sternberg's Dietrich films and Lubitsch's musicals this may indeed be one of the very best Hollywood films from the early 1930's, a film that is the equal of Renior's "Boudu Saved From Drowning." This is not an opinion I held before, but after seeing the glory of this Blu, I do now.

All the more reason for bringing that Criterion Lubitsch musicals set into the Blu ray age!

I was looking at MONTE CARLO last week. My goodness, Jack Buchanan had hair-trigger timing back in the day, and that elegant rumble of a voice that could suggest two completely opposite meanings of a line-reading at once.

And throw in the tongue-in-cheek 'Beyond the Blue Horizon' number, filmed as if it was an old Communist propaganda movie, and MONTE CARLO is downright irresistible!

Still waiting on Amazon for my copy. Current estimate is "Arriving Aug 14 - Aug 28".

I'd actually prefer a TV series to a feature film remake. The joy of these movies is Nick and Nora; the mystery is rather beside the point. HBO, FX, or Netflix with a short-episode order (maybe 8 to 13 episodes per season) would be ideal.

As you say, though, they'd have to nail the casting and get writers worthy of the pedigree.

I really like your idea of a TV series. Who to cast??? Trying to think of someone who has that bemused sophistication of Myrna Loy,,,,,and the right age. Mélanie Laurent or Audrey Tautou (I can't seem to think of anyone American)? William Powell type.......Benedict Cumberbatch (too snooty?)? Russell Crowe (too Oliver Reed-ish?)? Tom Hiddleston?

Yup, all those TV series of famous films in the fifties. You can see a trailer for Peter Lawford as The Thin Man in that great documentary, MGM: When the Lion Roars (ooh,I'd love an HD of that doc).

That's my status with Amazon, as well. It wasn't a big deal for me to get the title on release date since we were in Iceland anyway (just got back last night). I would have needed to ask my neighbor to get the package off my porch, as Amazon does their own deliveries here and there is no way to hold them like we can the USPS while out of town.

My only problem with a TV series is it just feels like the joke of them always needing a drink would just get old after awhile.

And every time I Myrna Loy the first person I think of is Debra Messing...

Jonny Depp was attached to this for awhile - Not being a fan of Depp, I think that would have been a disaster. I just did a search and found several articles indicating this was "put on hold" back in 2012, so I am assuming it is effectively dead.

Although not a remake, the TV series Hart to Hart with Robert Wagner and Stephanie (Powell?) was heavily influenced by Thin Man.

After seeing Up In The Air, I am convinced George Clooney & Vera Farmiga would be a perfect Nick & Nora. Their chemistry as a true adult couple ( rare in these times) was off the charts.

One of the better 85-year old HD presentations I've seen, but I found the audio somewhat distorted and tinny.

They'd only been making talkies for seven years at this point, so you'll have to forgive them if they didn't have all of the kinks quite worked out.

To offer a glimmer of hope for those who ordered from Amazon, I pre-ordered day one, and my copy was shipped Thursday. It arrived early this morning.

    It looks amazing!

    I'm in the club, too.

I pre-ordered The Thin Man from Amazon on July 5th.

The film was released July 30th.

Amazon is telling me that it will be delivered August 15-28th.
