Jon Turteltaub's The Meg, is Jaws on steroids, with many an homage to the earlier production.

An American / Chinese co-production, with a cast represented by both countries.

Great fun, reasonably believable, with top of the line effects.

The 4k Blu is derived from a 2k DI, but I could have sworn that I was seeing pure 4k data. It's that good.

Audio is likewise, superb, presented in Dolby Atmos.

    Image - 5

    Audio - 5 (Dolby Atmos)

    Pass / Fail - Pass

Hmmm. I can get this in 3D. Is it worth the purchase?

I mostly enjoyed it, and have the 3D pre-ordered.

I cannot speak to the 3D quality, as I saw it flat in the theater.

3D is the only reason to watch this movie.

I just watched the 4K disc and thought it mostly looked great.

BUT... I found that the HDR jacked up the white levels during daytime exteriors. Skies lacked any blue - they're just white - and characters faces threatened to get washed out due to the HDR.

The rest of the image really did look terrific, but the "set to 11" white levels turned into a distraction.

The Blu-ray offered better white balance and didn't show any signs of this issue...

Just imagine if the Meg itself was pure, snow white, as in the novel. They changed the color to more like a great white shark in the movie.

I think that was one of the book's tag lines, something like: "If you can see her glow, it's too late."
