While I don't have the time to cover most documentaries, this one was impossible to ignore.
Strand Releasing has given us a wonderful gift with an 80 minute doc by Steven Okazaki, on the life and career of the great Toshiro Mifune, probably best known as the submarine captain from 1941, but possibly to others, as the very special alter-ego of Akira Kurosawa.
Together, they made 16 films, including some of the most critically acclaimed and beloved films in the history of not only the Japanese cinema, but world-class cinema.
Anyone reading this, who is totally unfamiliar with his name, should immediately go back to the nunnery from when they came, and turn in their membership cards and decoders rings as issued by HTF.
Alternatively, immediately pick up half a dozen or so Kurosawa titles, as issued on Blu-ray and DVD via Criterion.
Best to start with Seven Samurai, Rashomon, Throne of Blood, The Hidden Fortress, High and Low, Yojimbo, and Red Beard.
No more need be said.
A wonderful way to spend an hour twenty, and learn more about an extraordinary legend of cinema, and at under $15 street, a bargain.
How many knew that Mr. Mifune was born in China of Japanese parents, and did not move to Japan until he was 21?
