8 megapixels screen resolution as opposed to 2 megapixels for 1080p...sounds like a quadrupling to me, Bruce!!! :P

Yes, four times the number of pixels, but only twice the resolution.

Everytime I re-read this I fill with respect for all those involved with this HercuLEAN task. We are fortunate to have Robert A Harris here constantly giving us the lowdown. Link below, for new eyes and old alike.

I took my mom in 1989 to Vancouver's Park Theatre to see the "Lawrence Of Arabia" restoration. It remains for me a cherished memory of a delightful and rare evening out, and it's another reason that I appreciate the efforts of Mr. Harris.

In 1989, I took my Mom, my Dad, my aunt, and my friends on at least 7 or 8 separate trips to the Ziegfeld in NYC to see LOA. That was a year I'll never forget.

    Robert,

I see in Japan there is a "Mastered in 4K" version split over two discs compared to the single disc U.S. version.

I know both stem from the same master, but there are some color timing differences. Is one more accurate than the other?

I'm in a real dilemma about this too.

I like the Japanese Disc better, although the differences are very very slight, but the US release has all the extras.

    1. I'm also curious about the red 'push' (as someone on the caps-a-holic site describes it) in the UK edition (which I presume is the same as the US one) when compared to the higher bitrate Japanese discs first mentioned here by willyTass.
    2. If both are from the same master, would the difference in 'color timing' be explained by the higher bitrate of the latter? Am on two minds on whether to pay the premium (though best price I can find) on this OOP charged by cdjapan.co.
    3. I'm aware of the problems associated with screen caps, but for what it's worth:

Importing the Japanese version is a waste of money IMHO

The compression was that good on the initial release, the two are indistinguishable in motion

Look, Lawrence. I'm making my red push on Damascus the sixteenth of next month and you are part of it. Can you understand that? You're an important part of the red push.

    LAWRENCE

I don't want to be part of your red push!

The McCarthyists did their best to eliminate the Red push but obviously 'they' are still with us ....

RAH, I'm sorry if this has been addressed before (I can see the query from Dave H in post #350 back in April), but I was curious, particularly in light of the new Sony Supreme Cinema Series discs and your projector, if you had ever imported and viewed the Japanese Mastered in 4K Blu-ray of Lawrence.

I have both discs, and like others who have seen it, I have to admit to a preference for it, minor though it may be. I was curious, too, if the additional Mastered in 4K tech makes any difference, since I cannot access it.

You might also be curious to check out Sony's Mastered in 4K BD of The Bridge on the River Kwai, which appears to be exclusive to Hong Kong and Japan (in a box set).

For the record, I believe the only other Asia exclusives are Hancock, Jerry Maguire and The Tourist. Interesting to see that Hancock was among Sony's initial UHD BD announcements, too.

I have the HK Kwai but have not watched it yet. For whatever reason, Lawrence is still exclusive to Japan.

Dude, stay away from the 'Mastered in 4K tech', it's the usual marketing snow job from Sony.
