He Ran All the Way is an interesting film, from a number of perspectives -- some dealing with the black list, and the destruction or derailing of careers.

It also carries with it, much like The Misfits, the fact that it was the final work of a superb artist, in this case, John Garfield.

A cursory look at the credits is revealing, more or less.

    Franz Waxman - Composer

    James Wong Howe - Cinematographer

    Guy Endore - Screenplay?

Well, not really.  Mr. Endore was a front for Dalton Trumbo and Hugo Butler, who were both blacklisted for the safety of our nation.

He Ran... is a nifty little, noir, with a running time of only 79 minutes.

As a Blu-ray, I was concerned that it might fit into the "iffy" category.

But with the exception of a few errant clumps of minus density, and a first shot that is best off viewed while squinting, it's a very good looking presentation.  Generally high quality black levels, gray scale, shadow detail and resolution.

This one is worth your time.

Thank you, I'd preordered this one a long time ago. Garfield is one of my favorite actors due to my father's affinity for this acting skills.

In addition to writers Dalton Trumbo and Hugo Butler, star John Garfield was blacklisted by the HUAC in 1951. But He Ran All the Way had already been shot in late 1950. It was also the last feature-length film director John Berry made before being identified as a communist and blacklisted by the HUAC.

It was the last film, Garfield made before his death at the young age of 39.

Selena Royle, who plays Garfield's disapproving mother, also became a victim of the blacklist.

Blu-ray.com says ˝...and the initial transition into the feature is marred by severe macroblocking...˝ . is that really macroblocking? what caused that macroblocking? Isnt ˝MB˝ caused by compression or bad encoding? -Anybody? I really want to know, Im trying to get to know as much as possible about these things...

It looks like a few seconds of reel damage to me, but RAH may have a different take on it.
