I had the opportunity last evening to screen the upcoming release of
24: Redemption, due for broadcast on Fox November 23rd.
I found the two-hour episode to be quite good, namely for the fact
that the show has drifted away from familiar themes and locales and
successfully given us something fresh to watch (or so it seems from
this premier).
As far as locales are concerned, the action takes place in both Africa
and Washington where amidst a presidential inauguration, we find
Jonas Hodges (Jon Voight) supplying arms to an African warlord who
is scooping up children to be part of his army to overthrow the current
government.
Enter Jack Bauer (Keifer Sutherland) who has found himself keeping
a low cover at a boy's orphanage in Sangala Africa that (as you can
guess) falls victim to the warlord's efforts to meet a quota of children
for his army. Suddenly, Jack is forced back into action to defend the
orphanage and get the children safely to the U.S. Embassy.
However, as always, politics come into play as an outgoing President
(Powers Booth) plans to pull troops out of Sangala within moments of
the inauguration of President Elect Allison Taylor (Cherry Jones).
A few thoughts....
Despite new locales and new faces, the production of the show retains
its familiarity with split screen action and counting down clocks. In fact,
for the first time, we are reminded at the opening of the show that all
events occur "in real time."
It was great to see Powers Booth back onboard, though it is uncertain
whether he will continue in the background now that a new female
President is being sworn in. Also back for this round is Tom Lennox
(Peter MacNicol), who we hope will remain loyal to the President he serves.
As for Cherry Jones as President Elect Allison Taylor, I have a very
good feeling about her. She seems to be very down-to-earth and
sincere about her Presidency. I think for the moment, viewers are
going to find themselves very comfortable with her.
None of the other LA CTU characters (such as Chloe) have returned
for this episode. The entire cast was supposedly revamped (as was
the new Washington locale), though it is rumored that Chloe will
eventually be back.
As for Jack Bauer, he whispers and screams throughout, dodging
machine gun fire and knife-burning interrogation. We all know by now
that there is nothing Jack can get into that he can't get himself out of.
All in all, this is a very exciting episode and a grand start to what
we hope will be an edge-of-our-seat season.
Highly recommended watch!
