Another stupid question - saw a pic of a line array a guy did, and he said he used an equalizer to smooth out the response - Would this be an option?

Agreed.. a drop of solder will give you a much better connection.

If I were convined I would not end up salvaging the crossover a year down the road, I would solder. But I have yet to get a 3rd degree burn from electrical tape.
