Mr. McDowall was an important proponent of film preservation and restoration, an invaluable link to production personnel in front of and behind the camera, and a huge aid to research wherever possible. The fact that he was liked by, and had access to, virtually everyone in the industry made his contribution even easier. His passing was a great loss to the field of preservation and restoration of motion pictures.
