Universal Studios Add New Titles to October HD DVD Release Slate

Universal Studios Home Entertainment has indicated that on October 24, 12 Monkeys, Out of Sight, Spartacus and The Thing will join Slither and The Interpreter to be released on HD DVD. These four titles herald the introduction of a possibly new HD DVD special feature to be included on Universal Studios' HD DVDs called "My Scenes". Which I suppose is similar to scene-bookmarking feature provided on all Warner HD DVD releases but is yet to appear on Universal Studios' HD DVDs. Bonus materials on these HD DVDs should be similar to those on their DVD releases.

Main Feature Presentation Specs and bonus materials for these titles are as follows:

    12 Monkeys (HD DVD)

    1080p High Definition Widescreen (1.85:1)
    Dolby Digital-Plus 5.1 (English & French) & Dolby TrueHD 5.1 (English)
English [SDH], French & Spanish subtitles
Bonus materials (Presented in 480i/p Standard Definition with Dolby Digital sound):
    - Feature Commentary with Director Terry Gilliam & Producer Charles Roven
    - The Hamster Factor and Other Tales of 12 Monkeys (The Making of 12 Monkeys)
    - Theatrical Trailer
    - 12 Monkeys Archives
    Out of Sight (HD DVD)

    1080p High Definition Widescreen (1.85:1)
    Dolby Digital-Plus 5.1 (English, French & Spanish) & Dolby TrueHD 5.1 (English)
English [SDH], French & Spanish subtitles
Bonus materials (Presented in 480i/p Standard Definition with Dolby Digital sound):
    - Feature Commentary with Director Steven Soderbergh and Screenwriter Scott Frank
    - Deleted Scenes
    - Inside Out of Sight
    - My Scenes
    Spartacus (HD DVD)
Duration: 3h 17 mins - Possibly the movie with the longest duration to date being planned for a HD DVD release.

    1080p High Definition Widescreen (2.20:1)
    Dolby Digital-Plus 5.1 (English, French & Spanish)
English [SDH], French & Spanish subtitles
Bonus materials (Presented in 480i/p Standard Definition with Dolby Digital sound):
    - My Scenes
    The Thing (HD DVD)

    1080p High Definition Widescreen (1.85:1)
    Dolby Digital-Plus 5.1 (English), Dolby Digital-Plus 2.0 (French) & Dolby TrueHD 5.1 (English)
English [SDH], French & Spanish subtitles
Bonus materials (Presented in 480i/p Standard Definition with Dolby Digital sound):
    - Feature Commentary with Director John Carpenter and Kurt Russell
    - John Carpenter's The Thing: Terror Takes Shape
    - Production Background Archives
    - Cast Production Photographs
    - Location Design
    - Production Archives
    - Outtakes
    - Post Production
    - Theatrical Trailer
    - My Scenes

All are mine!! (Although I've never really been a fan of Out Of Sight despite the critical praise it received). The other three, however, cannot come soon enough!! [IMG]

Will Spartacus be one one disc, or two? If it's on one, then it will definitely be the trial by fire for the format [IMG]

i hope this information about the aspect ratio is just a typo error. because if universal starts to crop this masterpiece, i surely wont buy it!!!

Given John Carpenter's hatred for Pan & Scam, it's gotta be a typo.

As for the titles themselves, props to Universal for all the support it's giving HD-DVD. Out of Sight and Spartacus will be mine!

I'd expect that at least the feature will be on one disc no problem (only 3h 17min). But depending on what the extras are, they could have to go to two discs. Paramount is going 2 discs for M:I 3 as a marketing choice, so Universal may just do the same with this. It will be interesting to see how this materializes.

I'm curious why no TrueHD for Spartacus?

This is one of my very favorite scores and truly deserving of a lossless presentation. I wonder if it's a space issue?

wasn't it either mono or stereo (for original soundtrack)? can older analog soundtrack elements scale well to lossless? just curious if it's "worth it". maybe a lossless mono/stereo AND lossless 7.1 remix?

Spartacus was originally 6 track stereo (five screen channels and a mono surround) so it should mix down nicely to discrete 4.0.

I'm guessing Dolby TrueHD was dropped due to the feature's longer running time. With that said, Dolby Digital Plus is no slouch.

    My guess as well.
As people have posted, this will be a true test, or a torture test if you prefer, of HD DVD.
Hope it passes with flying colors!!!

Mr. Harris, are you in any way involved in the mastering of this HD-DVD? What do you expect from the disc?
