Does anyone know if WB will release a WS version of this great classic flick??? The P&S version really is crappy. It doesn't even have any special features really. Not to mention the sorry Dolby 2.0 Soundtrack. WB's should release a special edition of this movie instead of being satisfied with the sorry release they already have got on the market. Is anyone with me on this???

What's even more disgusting is that Turner Classic Movies will be showing this in widescreen numerous times over the next few months.

I'm with you, I had to get rid of my DVD simply because it sucked so much. WB needs to put out a new DVD.

Way back when Warner did the HTF chat, they said that Warner has had no interest of reissuing their flat open matte discs such as this, the National Lampoon movies, Police Academy movies, Doc Hollywood, etc. And so far, they've stuck to their word. Sadly, I dont think a new version of this classic is on the horizon.

    Darren---

Trust me, there are plenty of people with you on this. I've picked this disc up many, many times at the store, then fought temptation and always put it back. I won't buy it unless it includes a WS 16x9 version of the film. And this is another of my favorite films. I'll just wait and watch the REAL version on TCM. A VHS copy of that'll have to do.

I don't understand why WB is so reluctant to release this title properly. It would be a HUGE seller, I'm sure.

As it stands now, the current release is little more than a coaster and I won't be buying it.

This is my favorite Christmas movie and probably one of my all-time favorite movies, but I will not buy it until a proper anamorphic widescreen version is released.

This year I will content myself to watching it on television.

This is actually the only non-OAR disc I have, a mistake made in ignorance three years ago when I was just getting into DVDs. I would gladly buy a new OAR version in a heartbeat.

BTW, since last Christmas I've gotten a 16x9 TV. Is "A Christmas Story" open matte? Can I just zoom it in to get OAR? I know the picture will still be lousy, but it's better than nothing.

WB said that (in the last chat transcript) when they're presented with the chance to revisit a title and OAR is an issue (such as an SE for one of their old P&S discs), they'll consider it.

Since 2003 is the 20th anniversery for A Christmas Story, I'm willing to bet that WB will do an SE.

Even TCM's print looks disgusting...so I'd like to see this film done right.

ADD: The current DVD uses a transfer that is at least 10 years old. It's likely open mate all the way (most opticals are NOT hard-matted...it's usually done for CGI stuff), so you could zoom. But you're zooming a transfer intended for laserdisc in the early 1990's.

The Sequel was OK but Charles Grodin can never be Darrin Mcgavin. If Warner can Release Mr Limpet OAR it just boggles that they cannot it for Christmas Story. I'd Love to see it onMy Big Screen but until they do I'll Snuggle Down one Holiday evening every year with TCM

WB isn't even to blame for this disc. It was released in 1997 by MGM/UA Home Video, and the current WB DVD uses the same transfer.

I know that when you want a movie SO BADLY on DVD you might sometimes consider buying an open-matte release in full-frame just because you have to have it (you could all say you wouldn't do it, but you know you would).

I did this with "Christmas Vacation" and can zoom it and make a few adjustments and it can look somwhere between bad and halfway decent on my widescreen set.

I ALMOST did this with "A Christmas Story" because I love it so much. I lucked out last Christmas and actually found the DVD at a local rental store... trust me, this is quite possibly the worst DVD you'll find outside of Madacy. My VHS literally looks better. I don't know why, but there seems to be some bizarre moire effect throughout the whole movie and at times the entire frame seems to be "waving" like bad TV reception.

Stay away, stay far away... no matter how much you feel tempted.
