A Study In Terror with John Neville as Holmes, made eight years earlier, was the first IIRC.
MURDER BY DECREE, however, made much later is actually a much grimmer version, with poxy whores and graphic violence. It is actually rather frightening at times. I've always been impressed how Clark was able to shift gears as a filmmaker from his early horror stuff to grabass foolishness like PORKY's to a gripping Ripper thriller like MURDER BY DECREE to the charming and nostalgic A CHRISTMAS STORY. Definitely an eclectic filmmaker.

John, you are quite correct. It was just not at as high a level of aristocracy as in MBD.
