A Bridge Too Far was an epic WWII movie from 1977, with a stellar cast. Target has it on sale for $7.99 this week, and I wonder how the quality is on the DVD. Has anyone seen or heard it? Target also has "The Good, Bad, & Ugly" for $7.99 and I'm interested in picking that up too, but Iheard a while back that a new version was coming out sometime. Has anyone heard anything about that as well?

I bought "A Bridge Too Far" years ago. Although it's not the best transfer out there, picture and sound quality are reasonable enough considering the time the movie was made. The movie itself is actually very good and is a decent dramatization of what happened during Operation Market Garden.

    At $7.99, it's a steal!

How can you lose for eight bucks? Ridiculous "star-studded cast" and all, it still has some great action sequences, and some of the stars (Sean Connery, Michael Caine, James Caan) actually work well in it.

Well these are too great movies I want on DVD, and if there is no better release on the horizon, I should get them at this price.

    A BRIDGE TOO FAR
Definitely worth getting. As posted above, the transfer quality is mediocre at best (and not 16x9 enhanced), though far from horrible. However it's probably the best we'll ever see since this one is widely (and unfairly, IMHO) regarded as a merely OK war film. For $7.99 it's a steal.
THE GOOD, THE BAD AND THE UGLY
Again, well worth the bargain-basement price. Picture quality on this one is much better than I expected. Besides, at only $7.99 it won't be as painful to upgrade later when and if they release a special edition. [IMG]

Well, at least R2 is getting a new special edition:
MGM are releasing a 2 disc special edition of the epic WWII ensemble A Bridge Too Far on May 5th 2003.
While the soundtrack hasn't been confirmed, the set will come equipped with an anamorphic 2.35:1 transfer as well as the following extras.
    - 'A Bridge Too Far: Heroes From the Sky' - Original documentary
    - 'A Distant Battle: Memories of Operation Market Garden ' Stories told by real life soldiers who fought in the battle that inspired the film
    - 'Richard Attenborough - A Filmmaker Remembers'
    - Audio Commentary with screenwriter William Goldman and key crew
    - Trivia Track
    - Photo Gallery
    - Theatrical Trailer

And for TGBU, there has been talk about a new restoration
with deleted scenes inserted and newly redubbed lines
    by Mr Eastwood himself.

Let's hope that the low sale price IS an indication of upcoming
special editions for both of them...

Er, my copy >IS< 16X9. Was this title released more than once? The transfer is decent, but certainly could be better. Regardless, it looks much better than the laserdisc did and is very watchable.

I did the compression on this film a long time ago. It's definately letterboxed. I remember it being 16x9 as well, but it was a long time ago.

"A Bridge Too Far" is one of my favorite war movies. While the star studded cast is a bit of a gimmick and certainly some were mis-cast, Connary, Cain, Edward Fox, and Hopkins were outstanding. The very mention of a feature laden R-2 release makes me green with envy. I just may have to adjust the DVD Rom on my laptop to play R-2 disks!

As an aside, I went to Arnhem last October and visited most of the battlefield sites including the excellent Airborne Museum that was former hotel used by Field Marshal Model and General Urquhart (Connary's character)during the battle. Very moving.

It's about as good as it's going to get. An excellent movie!! I wish they had done a better job on the transfer..

One of my few "blind buys" that I regretted. The movie was too boring for me or something. I'll have to watch it again. I just remeber the transfer was pretty crappy.

I like the politics and betrayals in the movie. A decent war movie on the tactical level, but much better on the organizational and political level. Tora, Tora, Tora is among the best war movies for political insights IMHO. Of course, Dr. Strangelove is super for politics, but I wonder if it is really more of a politics than a war movie....? Yes and no. More thought needed.

This is also among my favorite war films. I never tire of watching this movie. I love war movies that focus on a particular battle with the strategy of both sides alot more than war movies that focus solely on the effect of war on men. I feel the later has been overdone to death escpecially in recent years.

I just thought I should mention that it just got classified
    by the BBFC:
    "A BRIDGE TOO FAR
    Classified 07 March, 2003 . Run Time 168m 40s
    Part Subtitled, Widescreen,
AUDIO COMMENTARY WITH OSCAR-WINNING SCREENWRITER WILLIAM GOLDMAN"

"Part Subtitled" must be a good indication that the
subtitles are "burnt in" for non English speaking characters.

This is, of course, for the coming UK release but a R1
might also be around the corner.

MGM have been very good in Europe as we also go a 2 disk SE of The Great Escape last year with new anamorphic transfer.
However as this has not yet be released in the US along with the Robocop SE you may be in for a long wait ?

And the UK is getting Fargo and Misery SE's before the US too.

It's a bummer, cause while I live in the UK, all my DVDs are R1.
