Which version of A Better Tomorrow should I get? I've heard so many bad things about the Anchor Bay release.

The Anchor Bay release with a Mono Cantonese soundtrack. Check the back of the box right next to the Dolby Digital logo.

Here is a link to a review of two versions of ABT.

The Anchor Bay is the better choice even though it has a ten second dropout in the beginning of the film.
The "OFFICIAL" reason from Anchor Bay is that it is just the mix and that their master had sounds in the same place. I put my ear to the speaker and I didn't hear a thing. I guess nobody checks these before they go out. I could understand somebody not familar with the film not noticing the altered soundtrack on the first release. I can't understand why somebody didn't catch a ten second dropout within five minutes of the film. The mixer should be fired. If this is the real reason, it's a poor excuse.
Anchor Bay worked quickly to correct the first release but they should have watched the corrected DVD before they sent it out.
Here's a link for info on a bunch of Anchor Bay releases.

Didn't Hong Kong Legends recently pick up some of Woo's films? If so we'll see much improved R2 versions.

Hong Kong Legends has ABT 2. They couldn't get the rights for the first one.
They also have BULLET IN THE HEAD, THE KILLER, and I think ONCE A THEIF.
I am really looking forward to BULLET IN THE HEAD since the region 1 DVD will be released by Disney and most likely severely cut to get an R rating.

Why would Disney butcher these movies for a lesser rating for home video? I could understand if they were doing it for a theatrical release, but not for DVD.

Disney chops and dubs all of their Hong Kong films, theatrical release or not.
