Tough to come up with the definition.....and it's unfortunate that so many "signature" songs aren't necessarily "representative."

FOr example, I see Ramblin' Man listed a couple of times for the Allman Bros. Hard to argue with it being a signature tune, but it is not terribly typical....more of a transition song from their earlier Blues/Jazz combo to the countrified southern rock stuff (of which I'm not that fond).

But that's the tough thing with bands that have gone through any sort of growth...

i hate getting to fun threads like this late! grr...
i think a band's signature song is the one that everyone wants to hear at the concert! it's also probably the one the band can't stand playing anymore. :)
anyway, all the good ones are taken, but here's some i don't think i saw
depeche mode - enjoy the silence
new order - blue monday
pet shop boys - west end girls
a flock of seagulls - i ran
btw - this thread reads like the ultimate mp3 playlist! ;)

I remember watching David Spade on SNL a few years back. He was pissed off because he went to a Big Country concert and they didn't sing "In a Big Country."

Um, hello? It's only the name of your frickin' group and your only hit.

I have to veto Marilyn Manson's Sweet Dreams and say that The beautiful People is more recognisable to Manson. Since Sweet Dreams is a cover song.

Mudvayne - Dig

Stone Temple Pilots - Plush

Danzig - Mother

Godsmack - Voodoo or Greed (both are very personal songs to the band)

Disturbed - Down with the Sickness

Let's see,

Aretha Franklin - Respect (probably already been said but couldn't find it)

Dexy's Midnight Runners - Come on Eileen

Madness - Our House

U2 - New Year's Day

Jeff Buckley - Mojo Pin

Otis Redding - Try A Little Tenderness

Jackson 5 - ABC

Led Zeppelin - Kashmir as their other signature song

Cowboy Junkies - Their cover of 'Sweet Jane' has become a sort of signature song for them

I view Jimi Hendrix's version of 'All Along the Watchtower' just like this.

Both original artists, Lou Reed and Bob Dylan respectively both really liked thes guys versions of their tunes.

Rolling Stones - 'Satisfaction' of course but I submit 'You Can't Alway's Get What You Want'

Later, Rick

Great idea for a thread! I have many suggestions. I know some have been mentioned, but I am going to try and repeat as little as possible.

The Offspring - Pretty Fly (For A White Guy)

Nickelback - How You Remind Me

Disturbed - Down With The Sickness

Alien Ant Farm - Smooth Criminal

Reel Big Fish - Sellout

Huey Lewis and the News - either Power of Love or Heart of Rock and Roll

Deftones - either Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away) or Change (In the House of Flies). Most likely Be Quiet and Drive.

Stone Sour - Bother

Papa Roach - Last Resort

Sum 41 - Fat Lip

Sugar Ray - Every Morning (Chat C, I honestly feel this is)

Sublime - What I Got

Goldfinger - Here In Your Bedroom

System of a Down - Chop Suey! (Most likely)

Spineshank - New Disease

Powerman 5000 - When Worlds Collide

Jimmy Eat World - The Middle

Moby - South Side

Nirvana - Smells Like Teen Spirit

Static-X - Push It

AC/DC - either TNT or Highway to Hell

Linkin Park - In The End

Incubus - Drive

Uncle Kracker - Follow Me

Smash Mouth - All Star

Godsmack - Awake

Ramones - Blizkrieg Bop

Sugar Hill Gang - Rapper's Delight

Rob Zombie - Dragula

That is all I can think of at the moment.

Grateful Dead- I Know You Rider
I would have to disagree with this one. I think the Dead's signature song would most likely be Truckin' or Touch of Grey. However to Dead Heads (me), Dark Star would easily be their signature song. My personal fav from the Dead and my all time fav song is Terrapin. So take that for what it is worth. ;)
Another one I disagree on is The Doors. Break on Through and Light My Fire would not be their sig song. I would have to say The End would be their signature song.
Some more:
Primus - Jerry Was a Race Car Driver
Marilyn Manson - I agree with Beautiful People not Sweet Dreams
Tool - Stinkfist or Sober
Alice in Chains - Angry Chair
Elton John - Tiny Dancer
N.W.A. - F*ck The Police
Arrested Development - Tennessee
Foo Fighters - Monkeywrench
Pearl Jam - Evenflow
