Great, just what we need, more formats and more speakers to worry about :frowning:

I can't see a 9.1 track taking off in homes, hanging speakers from ceiling.

5.1 or 6.1 is perfect.

Enthusiasts are already requesting 10.1 for HD-DVD, which would include not only speakers on the ceiling, but an additional channel dedicated to vibration effects (bass shakers in your seat).
If the storage space is there and the information already exists, there's no harm in throwing it on the disc even if most people don't need it. Plenty of people said that 6.1/7.1 was too much for the home, but that made it into DVD soundtracks anyway.
I'd mount a small pair of speakers on the ceiling; why the hell not? It would be fun :D

I really don't understand why you need 9.1 Unless you have room like the movie theater, it's just pointless.

I hope they do come out with 9.1 or 20.1. The more things evolve the better it gets! I am enjoying DTS 6.1 Discrt and THX EX!

What does the size of your room have to do with overhead sound? I can see small roomsize rendering 4 surround speakers as gratuitous, but how does a small room negate the need for overhead sound? I think this is a cool idea (though I do have a ton of speakers already!)

9.1, 10.1, etc.etc.

yeah, that'll bring in the buyers....sure.

Here's my solution....

Why not just invent acoustic TAPE?!
Ya just stick it on any horizontal section of your wall, window frame, door, etc. It'd be like having a 100.1 system. :^)

What they need is a "smart" speaker system. Imagine this....
Your wireless speakers communicate back and forth with your receiver/processor so that the receiver always know exactly where the speaker is in the room and thus, sends it the corresponding signal. Place it front and centre and it sends the centre channel info. Move it slightly to the left or right and it adjusts the signal slightly. Add 6 more speakers to your room and they receive the according signal depending on where they are placed.
Heck, we could even take it one step further. The receiver transmits a signal that bounces off all of the walls, floor, ceiling in your room so that it can calculate the optimum settings for your room.
Tell me they can't do that now!! :)
