    From F'ed Company:
Rumor has it 800.com is closing. Most of the staff laid off yesterday, the rest being escorted out the door as I write this. I think the "official" day is February 22.

800.com, you will be missed. You were home to the greatest DVD bargain ever (any 3 for $1).

They are having a decent sale on whatever inventory they have left. Worth a look I guess.

Well, rumors are rife with talk that 800.com has laid off employees and will be closing shortly. Seems all movies are now out of stock. Anybody else hear anything?

Wow...the splash they made with the 3 for a buck, and then honoring the Bond 3 box set for the price of a single DVD when they mispriced. This would be a sad one to see go.

Where are you hearing the rumors? I've been looking for news reports and can't find any.

I always worry that rumors like this can become self-fulfilling. If there's anything to it, we'll probably get news reports after President's Day.

We did get confirmation from an industry person yesterday that 800.com is on the ropes. Fu**edCompany.com led with them yesterday and I rarely see them post erroneous information. Sometimes they post early, but rarely incorrectly.

That supremely stinks. A good company with great customer service. Every purchase I made with them, including my Toshiba 40H80, came quickly at a good price.

    "Who's next?"

    It has to be Buy.com...

And probably after Wall Street finally figures out Amazon.com turned a profit with "Enron" accounting*, their stock will go down in flames.

*Remember, they were "diversifying" by buying many other business a few years back.

It DOES supremely stink! Everything arrived promptly and in good shape.
AND, I ALMOST got stuck with a $50 gift certificate from a Christmas purchase. I found nothing left except a couple of SmartMedia cards for the digital camera![IMG]
Oh well, I guess that's better than getting COMPLETELY shut out! [IMG]

I should probably apologize for my original subject header. Given the name of the source of this report, and given that we're not allowed to use profanity in subject headers, I thought a little "Jay And Silent Bob" type humor might be appropriate.
It is a drag that they're closing, though. One less site to use for AmEx Blue pricematching. [IMG]

I will miss 800.com. I have ordered a lot of stuff from them and have been using them since mid 1999. Prices o.k., service good, no sales tax and quick delivery to California.

Why is it that these companies are having so much trouble? I live in a rural area with few shopping choices, so nearly everything I buy, whether it is electronics, DVD's, CD's, books, etc. -- basically the things sold by places like Amazon, 800.com, Buy.com -- I buy online. In fact, I just bought two books from Amazon through their used dealers that I couldn't have gotten anywhere else. I know I can't be the only one. So why do all these businesses fold? I fear the day when I can't get these things online anymore, because I have no real alternative.

I was thinking about the 3/$1.00 deal when they opened. I went back and looked at my DVD list and saw all of the movies I got for next to nothing. The days of the $5 off $20 coupons are long gone. Oh well, I guess we will never see those deals again.[IMG]
