I originally planned on buy one of the new Sony WV 600 series HDTV. This one supports both 720p/1080i. The toshibas and Mits models they sell at Best Buy only support 480p/1080i. Does this mean all video broadcasted in 720p will not be viewable on these two models? Or will it be downgraded to 480p? I want to watch everything in the best possible resolution, so is paying an extra $800 for the Sony worth it?

Nearly all HD receivers will convert 720P signals to 1080I. Only the very first Panasonic HD receiver downconverted to 480P as far as I remember.

If you buy an HDTV monitor that accepts and displays 1080i, 720p, and 480p, you will want to find an HDTV set top box tuner that outputs 720p as-is, not converted to 1080i or 480p. (And outputs 1080i as-is, not converted to 720p.)
