I just bought a Toshiba 57H83 (hasn't arrived yet.. a couple of days.. from what i understand (although i keep hearind differing opinions .. some say it does support 720p natively, others say it upconverts to 1080i..) for those of you who do have sets that upconvert 720p to 1080i how much better is the overall look than 480p? I am really looking forward to being able to check it out, just want some impressions. thanks in advance.

For the record it would be actually 'downconverting' the signal, as 1080i is interlaced, and therefore is only displaying around 540 real lines per field, and those fields are alternated to give the illusion of 1080 lines. It should still look much better than 480p though.

DeanWalsh, you act as if 1080i is only a moderate upgrade from 480p. From what I've seen, it is not "540p" as you say; it's not just 60 lines better than DVD.

I've heard that the resolution does drop down when you're viewing a fast-moving object. But for still imagery, like backgrounds and stationary objects, you get the full 1080. That's why a game like Syberia looks so fantastic. Whatever the case, 1080i is not as bad is some people make it out to be in relation to 720p.

Soul Calibur 2 looks much nicer to me in 720p upconverted compared to 480p. The screen isn't as wide, but the extra resolution makes up for it by far, IMO.
