So, I of course bought the excellent Budd Boetticher box set Five Tall Tales from Indicator but of course that set does not include the great 7 Men From Now.

I just discovered that there is a Japanese blu-ray of 7 Men available but I wonder if this means we may be going to get a Warner Archive release on blu of the picture...any rumors floating that this is possible?

Did you buy the Japanese bluray? I'm curious on the print quality before purchase

I did not pick-up the Japanese disc. My thoughts were that due to the Boetticher set from Indicator coming out that this sort of raised the profile of and interest in Boetticher. I figured someone be it Warner or Criterion (it's a perfect film for their collection) would get 7 Men out. Plus as Bruce says, whatever is out in Japan is probably the same transfer from the old DVD. My hope was to get a high quality disc from someone because it is an important and influential Western. Maybe it is coming, I've not heard anything but there has continued to be a flow of classic Westerns coming out on Blu-ray.

So, I can't speak to what is on the Japanese disc and like you I've been tempted to buy it but if it is not much better than the DVD, which was a decent transfer as I recall, I will just wait a while longer to see if someone else gets it out. I do wish there was more of a rumor mill on this stuff because it would prevent us from buying discs more than once. You know if Warner or Criterion puts out 7 Men you will end up buying it again.

This title is probably not with Warner. This is a Batjac production so it's probably in limbo like the rest of Batjac's movies when it comes to Blu-ray releases. When I purchased the HD digital last year from iTunes for $4.99, the file listed Paramount as the studio. Even the 2005 DVD release came from Paramount Home Entertainment. The question now is whether Paramount and Batjac are going to do something with these Batjac titles?

Yes, this is true I don't know why I mentioned Warner in the original post. It is a Paramount/Batjac DVD that I have. Maybe Paramount will do it as they just put out Gun Hill in a very nice blu. It would not surprise me if someone was working on a new transfer of it but if they are we probably won't know until they are ready to announce a release date.

EDIT: Oops, I mentioned Warner I guess because they are on the poster, ha. I'm just getting senile I think.

Warner distributed the movie during its theatrical run. However, the status of Batjac titles is a hot mess. Some have been released on Blu-ray while others like "The High and the Mighty" remain sidelined with that home video format. It's frustrating because we just don't know what's next with these films.

According to one of the reviews the picture seems to be pretty bad. No surprise there as I still have an HD broadcast of it somewhere and it does not look that much better than the DVD.

Warner does have another Boetticher-Scott film, Westbound, released on DVD by the Warner Archive. I would love to see this film released on Blu-ray.

Gentleman thank you for the info and insight. I was hoping that it was in better quality but from the research I did never heard of any update. I made the mistake of getting the hud bluray and it disappointed me so I didn't want to make the same mistake twice. Criterion needs to pick both up as well as the naked spur which is still in purgatory on that horrible dvd warner put out

It appears that the Wayne Estate does not think Blu-ray is viable for release since that is who Paramount would get the ok. I am very disappointed that Honda, the only title in that collection to be released in Blu-ray did not have the 3D version included.

This certainly needs a better release. I own the DVD, and iTunes "HD". The Criterion Channel is currently streaming the same versions as iTunes. Both these digital versions look quite poor. Unfortunately the DVD looks even worse.

I think the iTunes HD digital looks okay on my OLED displays. With that said, it's derived from an old scan so it can use a new scan and a Blu-ray release.:)
