i have a yamaha receiver with a 8ohm/4ohm switch for the mains and 8ohm/6ohm for rears now my question is, is it possible to use 6ohm speakers for the mains or will my speakers get damaged or receiver? if so what should i switch it to?

    What are the speakers?

Generally 6 Ohm speakers can be run at the 8 Ohm setting. Try it...listen for distortion at higher levels and watch for heat build up from the receiver. If you detect problems put the switch to 4 Ohm.

Without an Ohm vs Frequency graph it is difficult for people to visualize that oftentimes a speaker's impedance rating is given for a momentary dip into that territory at a specific frequency.
