Mat,
I am not sure what the "standard" seating distance would
be, but I sit between 4' and 8' depending on exactly where
I sit in my room and I don't have any problems vieing my 61"
Some people may get fatigue from being as close at 4' though
:)

Thanks. I can place my seating positions upto approx. 9' away from the TV so I would be fine.
I am just starting to plan, I may buy the TV this week and I will be starting to build the theater room in my basement this weekend.
Regards,
Matt

I sit as far back as 15 feet to avoid seeing the horizontal scan lines - and I can still see them faintly! That's what you get with NTSC.

that is why go invented the line doubler, get a progressive scan TV if you're too close to the screen. I sit about 8 feet from my set and it works great. The couch is about 10-12 feet away.

I sit 16 feet away and feel this is the perfect distance.

I sit 11" from my 57" widescreen. Perfect for DVDs, but I feel it's too close for cable. Cable is watchable @ 11', but @ >15' cable looks much better.

Eric,
Was that TV you had analog? The scan lines are darker gray horizontal.
