I am about to buy my first receiver since high school and (20 years ago) and I am looking for some advice. I am looking for a av receiver that can drive
Paradigm Monitor 3's and surrounds. I have about $700 to
spend. Any suggestions?

Pioneer Elite VSX-43TX Hands down for less the $700. I have had a Denon AVR-3802, Onkyo TX-797 in the last year and the Pioneer wins hands down. Here is a good deal from a good seller on AUDIOGON.COM..

If you don't need the extra amplification for 6.1 I think its the best deal around. I confess to being in love with my 520. I hate leaving home in the morning to go to work - I just want to listen to music and watch movies all day! :D

As a caveat, it takes awhile to get use to "programming" the thing - the manual really isn't very well written and the remote, while extremely functional, is not intuitively laid out (and some buttons that only are good for the receiver don't function if you're in another function mode - e.g. if you're in the "TV" function (VID2), the soundfield (Dolby, Neo6, Logic 7, etc.) buttons don't operate. You have to switch back to AVR function on the remote to change the soundfield. A nusiance.

Otherwise you'll enjoy it!

I have Outlaw/Parasound seperates. If I had a $700 budget, however, the Harmon Kardon 525 would be my choice. They have just come out with the same Cirrus triple crossover as the Outlaw, and offer all of the latest decoding and surround options. Power wise you may be fine, or you may need more, depending on your room size, furnishings, and listening habits. If you do want more, you can always add a good power amp later on.
