What exactly are the 6 channel Direct Inputs for? Are they for a pre-amp and using your unit as an amp? Are they for an external amp to get more power and use your unit as a pre-amp? Or are they for an equalizer or something of that nature?

99.9% of the time the 6-Chl inputs are for hooking-up DVD player analog cables for players that support DVD-A and SACD multichannel CD music. At this stage in the medium, these multichl CDs are not encoded for a digital output.
Receiver preouts are used to bypass the receiver's amps and add external "separate" amplifiers in 2 to 5-chl configurations for the most part.

Prior to that, the inputs were on "Dolby Digital Ready" receivers. Where the DVD player did the DD decoding (not the receiver) and outputted through 6 analog connectors. Thankfully this was short lived.
