Does the 6th speaker in a 6.1 set up have to be a center channel speaker? For example, if I am using two Klipsch bookshelfs as my rears can I just add another one of them in between the other two to complete my 6.1 system? Will this sound alright? I wasn't sure if it had to be a center channel or not.

It does not have to be a center channel. 1 direct rad. will work just fine.

Generally speaking you want all speakers to be identical. So adding another Klipsch would work well. You wold be ready for 7.1 as well because you would have to buy a pair.[IMG]

My main problem is where to put the extra 6th channel. Our couch is flush with the wall. The l&r rears are mounted high, to the side. I just have these images of me banging my head against the speaker repeatedly when I go to lean back... or my wife asking what that unsightly thing is hanging off our back wall... Pulling our couch out isn't much of an option, unfortunately.

While we are on the subject, let me ask a question---

what it be less than ideal to put the two additional rear speakers off to the sides of the couch on the two end tables I have... facing the TV of course? I could do that with little to no problem, aside from needing to come up with some speaker wire.

my setup would then look something like this:

    Sub L C R

    < ^ Couch ^ >

Is that just dumb? : )

For the 6.1 or 7.1 effect to work you must have your 6th & 7th speakers between your surrounds. In your case mounting the 6th speaker dead center maybe 3 or 4 feet above your head. If you can move your couch out even 1 foot from the wall then you place your surrounds also up about 3 feet above ear level when seated.[IMG]
