some dvd player claims that they can output 540 lines instead of the normal 500 on conventional dvd players (such as toshiba and pioneer)

does this really improve image quality ? ive on a strict budget and i cant afford a prog scan player since i dun have a 100MHZ tv yet.

540 lines of horizongal resolution means theat he picture detail is a bit clearer. Some people can see the improvement more obviously than others.
The maximum resolution possible on DVD is 540 lines, or alternating black and white dots in a row spanning a distance equal to the picture height on a 4:3 screen. The picture detail as recorded on the disk is approx. 720 all the way across by 480 high.
Due to skimping, many DVD players don't output the video to the TV with enough precision (insufficient high frequency response) to reproduce the 720 pixels across.
