I'm guessing that these binding posts are the ones with the threaded rod with a hole through them and a cavity at the end that receives a banana plug.

So, what are the 5 ways? I can think readily of these:

1. Bare wire poked through hole in post and then held by plastic threaded nut.

2. Banana plug inserted at end.

3. Spade lug placed over post and held by plastic nut.

That leaves two!

Are they:

4. Pin inserted through hole. (Similar to #1 above.)

5. Bare wire wrapped around post. (Similar to #3.)

Or, am I way off here?

Basically.

I don't know why they still call it 5 way binding post when some the mid-fi brands have this collar around the post thereby preventing spades from being inserted. Worse is when it is a threaded screw instead of a shaft with a hole in it, disallowing straight bare wire and pins.

The newer binding posts that has a hole big enough for a banana plug to fit through the hole should be called 6 way binding post, no?
