You have some good points rob-h, however as I do not have a proper SPL meter to check I had to use the method I outlined. It does sound great, and as my rear channels are so much closer backing of the channel level seems to have worked. I am however always "tweaking" and learning so I guess I'm not done yet. One day I'll pick up a SPL meter and set up as you indicated.
