Would it be a bad idea to hook up a pre/pro an an older reciever by connecting the pre-outs on the pre/pro to the 5.1/7.1 ch input on the reciever?

My problem is, I own an Onkyo 797 and have been eyeing the Outlaw 950. I do not have an amp, nor the funds to buys one. If I could hook the Outlaw up to the Onkyo's amplifier stage without compromising sound quality I'd be set.

It will work but is not ideal because Onkyo does not have the pre out-main in couplers. 7.1 channel input goes through the volume control and does not go throgh straigt to the amp. As an example, if you had HK AVR8000 you could access the amp directly(of course, if you had that you would not need 950--just an example). But, until you have dedicated amps it is worth trying.

There would be no problem doing this. I once hooked up the Sony TAE-9000ES pre/pre to my Pioneer Elite 24TX receiver. It worked just fine.

Thanks for your replies everyone!

Ken,

Thanks for taking a look!

Vishwa,

Yes, I saw some receivers with those "Main IN" jacks and always wondered what the difference between those and 5.1/7.1 ch inputs were. Thanks for clearing it up.

Kevin,

Do did you hear any extra hiss or interference when hooked up this way? Also, what volume level did you set your receiver to? And, how do you like the 9000ES pre/pro? That was one of the ones I was looking at (much more available than the outlaw)
