I have a friend that's just getting into Home Theater and is looking to complete his audio system. He's going to have a baby in a few months, so his budget is tight. I haven't been in the speaker market for a while and was wondering if anyone could help me out with giving him some suggestions. I think he can do without a sub right now so that cost can be factored out.

Hi Jonathan,

Check out the Acoustic Research HC6 5.1 system. It's available at etronics.com for $364.99. List price is $799. It sounds good and looks even better -- beautiful piano-black gloss finish. It's a compact set-up too, which should help with the spousal acceptance factor.

Another set-up worthy of consideration is the Energy Take 5.2 Check the link below for an e-tailer who will sell the four sats and center without the sub for $418.00. Like the AR system above, these are small speakers, so a sub would really be neccessary to fill out the bottom end, especially for HT use.

One final suggestion: The Onkyo SKS-HT500
I think these are surprisingly good-sounding speakers for the money. Right now JandR has a killer price on the full 5.1 set (factory refurbished) for $150.00. Circuit City has them new for $300. Check the top link below for a review and the bottom two links below for prices.

I like Polk, their lower end line....like the R20 is pretty nice for the price.
