Has anyone heard this cd? I've been tempted to pick it up but haven't yet. Sure sounds interesting but I haven't heard anything about it. Just wondering if it's a worthwile purchase or not.

4 Generations of Miles - Ron Carter, Jimmy Cobb, George Coleman & Mike Stern
The night of May 12, 2002 may have just become another important milestone on the timeline of legendary jazz trumpeter Miles Davis. Four musicians, each representing a different Miles Davis band from his ever-evolving career, came together at the club Makor in New York City to do what everybody said couldn't be done: to effectively fuse together elements of the radically different styles that Miles Davis embodied over his 45 years of professional performance. But after witnessing the masterful skills of drummer Jimmy Cobb, tenor saxophonist George Coleman, bassist Ron Carter and guitarist Mike Stern, it is clear they almost immediately established the kind of chemistry that pays tribute to every facet of Miles Davis' lifetime of work. Four contrasting approaches to the jazz combo; four different perspectives on the improviser's art; one live set in New York City- this is the 4 Generations of Miles - a live tribute to Miles Davis.

Steven, where did you read this? Is this the new Chesky Miles tribute CD? Lee Scoggins mentioned such a disc here recently. I don't know if the Chesky disc is out yet. I would like to see Chesky put this title on SACD.

Steven, thanks. I know that Lee Scoggins knows David Chesky. Perhaps he can probe Mr. Chesky regarding the Miles tribute on SACD. :)
I have not heard anything about any new Miles Davis SACDs coming down the pike. As you may know, Sony showed Dark Magus and Bitches Brew in its 09.01 SACD brochure and had provided a release date for Dark Magus awhile back, but neither title materialized. At least we got In A Silent Way on SACD. Besides wanting more from Sony, I'd like to see Analogue Productions release more Miles Davis titles on SACD. Once Cookin' came out on SACD (which I still do not have), I was hopeful that other Prestige titles would come out as well (Steamin', Relaxin', Workin', Bags' Groove, etc.). :frowning:

Steven, I know, I know. For now, my K2 remaster and DCC gold CD versions of Cookin' will have to do. I've been buying a lot of music lately and haven't gotten around to the Cookin' SACD yet.

Keith,
ok, I'll cut you some slack since you already have 2 versions of Cookin'. But real men own the SACD :D :D
Kevin,
Let us know what you think of 4 generations once you receive it.

I just picked up 4 generations. Sounds great, especially for a live recording! They do 3 tunes from Kind of Blue, (Freddie Freeloader, Blue in Green and All Blues) sounds awesome, I am diggin Mike Stearn's electric guitar on these tracks. I highly recommend this disc, good job Chesky records! Now, how about a multichannel sacd release of this title!

Steven, thanks for the comments. Glad to see they included some tracks from Kind of Blue. Did you find this CD in a brick-and-mortar store? If so, was in the jazz section under "various artists"? Thanks in advance.

Yes, it is out obviously and it did get a great write-up in Stereophile.
I understand the sonics are superb as is common for Chesky and the performance is very good.
My best recommendation is to pick up the latest Stereophile for more details.
I would be surprised if David did not eventually put this out on Super Audio given the positive response. I refer David to this site from time to time.
I may be able to give a scoop on upcoming releases soon from Chesky Records. Stay tuned. :)

I think they are planning to do these over time Keith.

Give Analog Productions some time, as meticulous as Steve Hoffman and Kevin Gray are it takes a while for the mastering work to be completed.

I understand the current titles are selling very well so Chad Kassem is heavily incented to keep the gravy train going.

Lee, definitely press David Chesky to put the Miles tribute on SACD. ;) Any insider information you can provide about future SACDs would be appreciated. More Rebecca Pidgeon, please! :)
I hope you are right about Analogue Productions doing more Miles Davis on SACD. I suppose after the great efforts with CCR, Messrs. Hoffman and Gray deserve a vacation, but just a short one. There's a lot of great music out there to re-work. :D
