I don't think I've seen anyone talk about the French blu/DVD combo of Douglas Sirk's Sign Of The Pagan (1954) from France. It was previously released in both Spain and Germany on DVD in 4x3 letterbox versions. But for the first time, it is now in 16x9 anamorphic 2.35 scope in blu ray. It looks very good, not perfect but it's unlikely it will ever go under restoration but for fans of Sirk, it's the best its probably looked since its original release. French subtitles are easily disabled. It's from Elephant films who brought us the gorgeous looking Sweet Charity blu ray recently. If you're a Sirk fanboy or a fan of the film, this should be a no brainer for purchase. The DVD included is of the 1.37 alternate version. No, it's not P&S but the film was shot twice in both formats, CinemaScope and Academy ratio.

Thanks Thomas for drawing attention to this.

Somebody had mentioned that it would be released soon in another thread but as I have seen horrible releases before even from companies where I did not expect it I waited to see reviews.

I found one and with it a bunch of screencaps and unfortunately it looks like a nicely dressed up SD master. One has to click on the little pics to see the whole thing in 1080p

The writer for DVDclassik also seems to think this is from an SD master but my French is a bit rusty:

I use this site a lot and their caps are quite reliable so if somebody expects another Sweet Charity that indeed looks very nice as you can see here:

he will unfortunately be disappointed.

Does this blu ray play on region A players ?

I have a region free player so I'm not the one with a definitive answer but I believe Elephant films are region free. Kino Lorber has a recent deal with Universal with many titles from the 1950s so perhaps Sign Of The Pagan may be among those titles.
