The distance from my viewing position (on sofa) to the wall where my direct view TV will be is 11 feet.
Is a 36" a good size screen for a viewing distance of about 9 feet? What about the 40" XBR700? Will that be too big for my viewing distance?
    Thanks!

I have a 32" XBR at the same viewing distance and I wouldn't want anything bigger for TV viewing. Movies (on DVD), on the other hand, are different story -- I can view them on a 56" wide screen TV from the same distance. I would recommend stopping by a store with a tape measure and checking out what it feels like with different sources.

I wouldn't go any bigger than 32". Granted you can get by with larger when viewing DVD, but broadcast and video tapes would look nasty (scan lines, etc.).

True, resolution won't increase on things like broadcast and VHS -- but scan lines aren't a problem with an XBR (at least with my 32XBR400) until you get about 4 feet away!

I sit about 9' away from my 35" 35XBR48, and I wouldn't mind a larger TV if it has a line doubler.

I own the 36xbr400 and I am about 8-9 feet away. Perfect size! I would be disappointed in anything smaller and I compared bigger sets and found them difficult to watch that close.
I watch a combination of regular cable and DVDs. Not too big for regular tv and just right for letterboxing.

Thanks for the advice! I have decided to go for a 36" XBR 450.
