    1) Star Wars SE's.

Very best transfers of the star wars films on laser - so good that i won't bother with any DVD release. I'll wait until an HD-DVD version comes out. DD 5.1 sound is awesome as well.

    2) the Lion King.

Ditto for getting this on regular DVD. Beautiful transfer.

    3) Dances with Wolves (extended version).

Usually, extended versions aren't as good as the theatrical version (see T2, for example). But the extra hour on this LD isn't wasted, it's outstanding and improves and already excellent film. Honestly, this by itself is worth the $100 needed to get a used LD player...

Don't forget the next four reasons:

    4. Schindler's List DTS: Not on dvd now, Great transfer and sound. When the dvd comes out, Speilberg will probably remove the guns and replace them with tazzers.

    5. Titanic DTS: Not much to say about this one besides awesome.

    6. Casper DTS: Awesome soundtrack! One of the best.

    7. Indiana Jones Trilogy: May be on dvd before I die.

My local theater brings in a midnite movie every friday night, and tonite it is "Raiders of the Lost Ark", and they are advertising it as a "new 35mm print".
    I'm *excited*! [IMG]

And let us not forget #8-12.

#8-1776 Pioneer Special Edition. The definitive cut of the film.

#9-Jaws 25th Anniversary Boxed Set. For the uncut documentary.

#10-My Fair Lady Boxed Set. More extras than were on the DVD, plus the only chance to hear Audrey Hepburn's vocals within the film itself by switching to the analog tracks.

#11-Criterion Collection: Close Encounters Of The Third Kind (CAV). Only chance to see both the original cut, and also the most complete version of the film possible.

#12-It's A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World. For the longer version of the film as presently available. The DVD is pointless except in raising sales figures to get a bigger restoration from MGM.

    #13- Smoking: How To Stop

    #14- The First National KidDisc

We've got a two theaters in the St. Louis area that also show old movies on fri. and sat. nights. Usually the movies aren't that great, but lately they had the matrix and the Godfather. the print on the godfather was in terrible condition. the dvd blew it away. I would love to get to see Raiders on a new print.

    Doh!

I concur with #15, but let's not forget

#1(a): Star Wars Trilogy--The Definitive Collection

Those two are the reason that I got a LD player, and I'm happy (and even happier now that I know that "Hearts of Darkness" is available on LD!).

I wonder how many used laserdisc players the original Star Wars movies have sold? [IMG]

Terrell - the thing is, the Special Edition lasers are IMO so good that i really don't care if Lucas releases either the SE's or the originals on DVD. I can live with what i have...

I would agree. However, I'd be willing to bet the eventual DVD will smoke both LD box sets in transfer and audio. I just thank God I have the Definitive Collection box set, because we probably won't see the originals on DVD, unless Lucas changes his mind. That would be a travesty. So I'll just burn them.[IMG]

After reading Matt's thread on his search for Star Wars bliss, I began my own search. My collection is just getting off the ground.

I just bought a Laserdisc player this week, and just won the "Faces" Star Wars trilogy off ebay as well as the Indiana Jones trilogy. [IMG]

Here's another reason: The Ultimate Oz boxset. I just bought a pristine, factory sealed [IMG] one off of eBay last month. It took me a weekend to get through all the audio supplements!

Welcome to the family of LD player owners Chris! I don't think that you will regret your purchase.
