From Criterion's web page;

"16x9 Display Gitch
There is an authoring glitch on the first printing of Criterion’s edition of Playtime. Two supplements—an introduction by Terry Jones, and Tati’s 1967 short Cours du Soir—were inadvertently flagged to play back in 16x9 mode, causing the image to appear vertically compressed and letterboxed rather than full-frame. This problem has been corrected on all subsequent printings of this DVD."

It is OOP because are working on re-releasing an improved edition. The catch is that the improved version will have a different spine number.

Hrm, this could be good news or bad news:
Looking at the back of my copy it says "First printing." If the 2nd printing is more common than the first then I've got a rarer out-of-print copy. I'm curious which one was printed more, then, or which one would be more valuable.
I think I'm gonna have to go back to the trenches to search for Printing #2 :)

Well, someone back on page one of this thread was
correct about the 'secondary' sellers over at amazon.com:
my ordered copy of Mon Oncle got cancelled
and I got refunded.
Lucky for me, I snagged the copy in the electronics store
down the street (Fry's) "just in case."
Now I just need to hope the other secondary vendor
off of amazon.com doesn't cancel my order of
Playtime because I am working 9am-11pm
through Sunday, and have no opportunity to run to
a Border's or other brick and mortar store.

Well, for anyone who happens to be near my area, the Virgin Megastore in downtown Vancouver still has copies of Play Time available.

Oh man, I just found out about the OOP titles this morning. Barnes & Noble.com listed Playtime as being in stock, so I ordered that. Best Buy.com was still taking orders on Mon Oncle and M. Hulot's Holiday, although it says "usually ships in 5-7 business days." I ordered those too. And I ordered all three titles from DVD Empire, which says "ships when stock arrives."

So, have I overreacted, or am I totally screwed?

David-
You may or may not be screwed.
And depending on your DVD addiction, you probably
haven't over reacted: I've tried to buy Mon
Once
and Playtime from mulitple
on line sources and met with frustration.
FYI: Barnes and Noble no longer shows
Playtime as available.
Also, I find it funny that some Criterions go OOP
and they can still be found without much effort:
I still see Dead Ringers floating around
and still relatively cheap on eBay for those people
who don't hastily buy them up.
The Critierion's of Tati's films are already being
gobbled up on eBay at $55.00 a title or more.
(I just hope my copy of Playtime ends up
being the second pressing.)
Regards,
Mark

For anyone who can make the trip to J & R Music World in lower Manhattan, NYC, they have multiple copies of all 3 Tati DVDs, at least 10 copies each as of Thursday evening and the Playtime DVD is the second printing. To others who live out of state you could probably order them via their website http://www.jandr.com.

I called DDD direct and the customer service rep.
commented that there are a lot of orders now on backlog.
The normal situation would be just getting a shipment
from the distributor, but now that looks bleak.
Unless there is a carton of stock on it's way to DDD,
the back-orders will be left unfulfilled.

Last night I was able to get all 3 from the local Borders
and use the 10% coupon (Playtime was the 2nd printing).

Not so any more -- my friend just went down there this afternoon and after seeing none on the shelves he asked management, and they confirmed none were on the floor OR in the stockroom. Oh well, guess word's REALLY gotten out now....

Found a 2nd-print copy of Playtime at my usual Barnes & Noble hangout, woohoo!
:D:D:D:D

Now I have a 1st and 2nd print; both will remain wrapped until it's known if/when a re-issue of the movie will be released.

A set of the three just sold on Ebay for $164 + shipping on the "buy it now" option, so I hurried on down to my local Borders and found all three (last copy each) and was able to get them at less than $24 a piece with my Border's coupon. In a way, I'm tempted to hold on to them unopened to sell them later and make a profit, but I know that, in the end, I won't. Anyway, thanks for the alert. They weren't even on my "to buy" list.

I was able to order Playtime from a Canadian etailer cnl.com yesterday and already recieved shipping notification. Might be worth a try for those who still haven't been able to order it.
