Circle of Deception , a rather good WW2 thriller from 1960, had a showing on UK tv last week. Unfortunately it was full screen. I contacted the channel who told me it was sourced from a 16mm print as it is yet another lost film.

Could Disney taking over Fox be the reason the first movie released under the Twentieth Century Studios banner, The Call of the Wild, be more of a Disney animation than an action movie about a remarkable dog?

In the above quote box, I have edited Thomas T’s original list (which can be seen unabridged at the Page One header of this excellent thread) in order to highlight the remarkable contributions of BD offerings that came out of Twilight Time during their 9 year tenure. Being that this thread was established in 2007, which pre-dated the dawn of TT, we have here yet another representation as to why they will be missed for many years to come.

Thank you Thomas T, as your instructive thread and reference guide to CinemaScope films has navigated me well and; along with the late Mr. Redman; greatly enriched my personal library.

Nick Redman and TT was a boon to lovers of Fox's CinemaScope period. Titles like No Down Payment, Rains Of Ranchipur, Wayward Bus, Violent Saturday, Sound And The Fury and Adventures Of Hajji Baba that I never thought would see the light of day on blu. Who knows what other treasures we might have seen if not for Mr. Redman's untimely passing.

With the release of the Joan Collins box set this week, all in CinemaScope, it seems quite possible within the next three years almost all of Fox's major CinemaScope films will see the light of day on DVD as there aren't that many left to go. Red available in R1, Blue available in R2, Black not available in R1 or R2 in anamorphic wide screen. *** indicates a blu ray release available (possibly OP now) in either R1 or R2, otherwise DVD only.

Well, okay, more than I thought but anyone care to bet that at least 75% of them will see the light of day?

Great list Thomas. I was lucky to have seen them all where I worked when they were originally released. If I remember correctly, JOHN GOLDFARB,PLEASE COME HOME was going to be our Xmas attraction but it was delayed world- wide due to a court case in the USA. It eventually was released after the court case was over, possibly the following year. There was a fear that Fox would never be allowed able to release the film

Just had a double bill. Enemy Below, great transfer of this WW2 cat and mouse submarine chase movie, with Germans speaking heavily accented English, and lots of young future star faces on the American ship, and another great looking transfer of The Man In The Gray Flannel Suit, a soap opera, overlong movie, directed by Nunnally Johnson, one of the dullest directors ever let loose on a major studio movie, with lots of WW2 flashbacks that may have been Darryl Zanuck getting prepared to make The Longest Day a few years later. They talk of too many long movies being released these days but Man was 2 hours 32 minutes long and not the type of movie to be shown as a roadshow epic, and my goodness I found it hard to stick with its episodic jumping between office politics, slushy family drama, and war.

Where and how did you watch them? Streaming? On disc? On broadcast TV?

There's a double Blu-ray pack of Flints: Our Man Flint (1966) & In Like Flint (1967) on Amazon France for 20 euro. It's from BQHL Éditions, they state region B, but I read somewhere that most BQHL Blu-ray are in fact all regions, but I dunno.

A lot of the 20th century Fox films are broadcast on Roku Classic Reel channel including The Egyptian, Good Morning Miss Dove and others from Paramount and Columbia. It’s the only streaming service that has Cecils B Demille Story of Doctor Wassill and Columbia’s Young Doctors. I don’t know if these copies are legally cleared but they generally have good watchable copies of seldom available films

Just after seeing an interview with Joan Collins detailing what she had to put up with when in Hollywood under contract at Fox I watched The Adventures of Hajji Baba, an absolutely awful Arabian Nights adventure, though clearly filmed in California, with handsome John Derek, later the “discoverer” of amongst others Ursula Andress and Bo Derek, surrounded by buxom females, few of whom had any acting talent whatsoever, but who no doubt pleased Spyros Skouras and Bud Adler the two old men running the studio who according to Joan took advantage of every pretty young actress unfortunate to cross their path. The movie is simply terrible. Were it not for the chance to cast so many actresses it doubt it would ever have got made. Avoid even out of curiosity! Why TT put it on Blu Ray is beyond me!

To each his own, I suppose, but yes - I found this one just plain bad taste meets bad acting, bad cinematography, and bad just about everything else. Normally I can find at least one quality, even from a stinker, that I admire, or think was valiantly put forth. But this one just failed to grab even my marginal interest. And especially since a lot of Fox 'scope' movies remain MIA, along with other Fox movies not in scope, I just think this one was a wasted opportunity where something better could have been substituted in its place. Would absolutely be thrilled to have the following Fox titles reach the light of day someday. PS - I realize a good many are NOT scope productions.

Sorry to move away from 20th Century Fox for a post, but just to say that Universal are releasing an all regions Blu-ray of The Story Of Doctor Wassill on March 26th next year, of course I don't know how it will look.

Por el Valle de las Sombras (BD) [Blu-ray]: Amazon.es: Gary Cooper, Laraine Day, Signe Hasso, Dennis O'Keefe, Cecil B. DeMille, Gary Cooper, Laraine Day, Paramount Pictures: Cine y Series TV

What's the problem with King & I, for someone who didn't buy the collected R&H boxsets?

Disney Movie Club is now diving into their Fox catalog, and we're finally getting individual releases of the non-"Sound of Music" Fox R&H Musicals (maybe we did earlier, and I hadn't been paying attention), and I noticed that my DVD hadn't been upgraded since the 00's.

Sink the Bismark has been on Blu Ray for some time, and The Man In The Gray Flannel Suit and Soldier of Fortune are both on Blu in the US. While I agree about Inn of the Sixth Happiness not being totally wonderful colour I like my Blu Ray of Blue Max and Desk Set a lot.

anecdote. I was lucky enough to work with Ursula Andress twice. Lovely, not just beautiful, but very intelligent and funny lady. One day I mentioned Blue Max and she told me how upset she’d been with George Peppard. “ I was naked in bed with him and he never even got an erection!”

The King & I is one of several Fox CinemaScope titles whose colors skew heavily towards blue on the Blu-ray release.

Neither The Man In The Gray Flannel Suit and Soldier of Fortune are on Bluray in the US.

As far as I know, of these two, only Soldier got a Bluray release and only in Germany.
