Last I heard, MI Final Reckoning was looking like it might exceed the $571 million dollar box office of Dead Reckoning. But as we all know, because of a production cost of around $400 million + maybe $200 million for advertising, studio overhead, and Cruise first-dollar gross pay, the total negative cost of the movie is probably around $600 million. Since theaters keep almost half of the box office, even even if the movie makes $700 million it would still be on track to lose maybe around $200 million. As that article posted in the previous page said, costs have gotten out of control for some movies, and this one is another example where even good box office leads to a deluge of red ink. Where next for Tom Cruise? I'm sure studios will still want to work with him, but I'm guessing they might say something along the lines of: "What's the best movie you can make for maybe around $175 million?"

A big success has been Final Destination: Bloodlines, which so far has made $257 million worldwide on a production budget of about $50 million. That might even be even an all-time best for the series.

Yeah I doubt Final Reckoning will reach that breakeven amount of $1.2 billion. Seriously what were they thinking?😳

They must have wanted to keep Tom Cruise happy/working at Paramount. I know there was talk about Paramount playing a long game of making money from streaming but they can't think that they can make up hundreds of millions from one movie or series on Paramount +.

They were thinking that Fallout was the highest-grossing film in the franchise and was rapturously received by fans and critics. In 2018, when the deals were made for Cruise and McQuarrie to do two more, it made all the sense in the world. They had no way of knowing that Covid would massively inflate the budget while changing the entire theatrical landscape.

In a weird coincidence, It's worth noting that the top two are both live-action remakes of animated films originally written and directed by Chris Sanders and Dean DeBlois.

Sanders is involved as an executive producer on the new How to Train Your Dragon. He is also an actor doing the voice of Stitch in Lilo & Stitch even though he didn't write or direct the new one. So Sanders has his hand in both of the top two this weekend.

DeBlois, of course, directed his own remake for Universal after doing the same on the entire animated How to Train Your Dragon trilogy. The first film was co-directed with Sanders and DeBlois did the sequels as sole director.

Did they even market Elio? I barely saw one trailer for it. Saw incessantly marketing for 28 Years Later for the past month or two.

I saw trailers and posters for it multiple times. I didn't see trailers for 28 Years Later. I guess it just depends on what movies you are going to see. 28YL was probably on a lot of other horror movies which I deliberately avoid.

I also believe Disney would have trailered Elio with Lilo & Stitch. I didn't see L&S to confirm that, but it makes sense that they would have used one big family film to market another one.

I saw tons of TV spots for 28 Years Later and How to Train Your Dragon, including the incessant Burger King tie-in ads. I saw far fewer for Elio.

I bet Universal is wishing they'd held M3GAN 2.0 for the fall instead of trying to compete in the busy summer season.
