Not about 2025 specifically, but Jeopardy had some fun box office clues last week.

An interesting analysis of Mission Impossible and franchise films and their revenue steams.

There’s a lot of questions whether this opening (and we haven’t seen the full spectrum of foreign yet) is substantial for a production which cost $300M-$400M. Here’s the thing: For Hollywood studios, the value of franchise properties increases with each subsequent installment and across multiple revenue streams. Where new entries have one waterfall, franchise films benefit from an entire library. Paramount celebrated the Mission: Impossible franchise across Home Entertainment digital platforms and Paramount+, driving a substantial uptick in views of the previous films on Paramount+ and transactions via Digital Retail partners. I’ve heard that the original 1996 movie alone generates $10M a year from all types of media for the Melrose lot. Hence, that $300M+ movie is a lifelong investment that should pay off heads and tails in TV airings and streamings of Final Reckoning. Also remember, Paramount is only on the hook for 50% of the production cost. We’ll keep assessing this as business for the film moves along. Unlike, Dead Reckoning, as we already told you, Final Reckoning has three weeks of Imax.

Anyone know what's up with Snow White this weekend? Could just be an error, I suppose, but The Numbers has it dropping over 66% of its screens, but also making a boost of 137% over the 3-day weekend. On a per-screen basis ranking, that would make it #4 for the weekend behind Final Destination: Bloodlines. Seems odd.

I don't know, but I have a theory. Disney could have paired it with Lilo & Stitch as a double feature in some locations. I've heard of drive-ins doing this with movies from time to time, although I've never actually been to a drive-in so can't confirm with personal experience. But in situations like that, the studio splits the cost of tickets between the grosses of the two movies. So if places are showing a double feature of Lilo & Stitch and Snow White, then Snow White would get a boost in its grosses from that even if the buyers only stayed for Lilo & Stitch. I've heard of this happening every once in a while. This would certainly be a way for Disney to boost the Snow White number a bit artificially. But of course it's still a huge bomb regardless.

It is worth noting that if the Monday estimates are correct, Lio & Stitch will have made more in its opening weekend than Thunderbolts has in its entire run so far. I'm not at all surprised that Lilo is going to come out on top between the two. But the speed with which it has been able to do that really speaks to Thunderbolts not really being able to catch on significantly after its opening. That's too bad -- I think Thunderbolts is easily Marvel's best movie to release after Wakanda Forever. But even though Thunderbolts is actually good, people seem to care less than they used to because so many of Marvel's recent projects have been well below their previous quality standard. It is a cumulative effect of making bad movies that is now burning one that is actually good.

Also: the original Lilo & Stitch opened second behind Minority Report back in 2002. Now, the chart position has changed and Tom Cruise is in second.

The simple truth is that Mission was body slammed by LILO.

Final Reckoning was the biggest opening weekend ever for the Mission: Impossible franchise, so it was well within expectations and really didn't have the potential to go much higher. Franchises don't usually broadly expand their audiences with the eighth entry. By that point the audience is usually well-established, and often shrinking. This was a great opening for MIFR.

I think it did very well all things considered. The audience can’t be held responsible for Paramount spending more on the last two entries than anything in the series’ history would justify.

On the other hand, one of the trades reported that Paramount makes over $10 million each year just on licensing deals and home media revenue on the first movie alone, and that each new film in the series causes the previous entries to make an above average dollar amount despite years in release. So I’m sure their thinking wasn’t just today’s box office but maintaining and adding to the value of the franchise as a whole.

The Final Reckoning made more than enough to have opened #1 with the same gross on an ordinary weekend. The fact that Lilo & Stitch opened on top of it does not make this a bad opening. I don't think Paramount could have reasonably expected much more from it than they got.

Lilo & Stitch and The Final Reckoning are a perfect example of counterprogramming that worked very well. They are two very different films targeting two (largely) different segments of the audience. Both of them connected with the audience their respective studio intended to reach.

A good sign for The Karate Kid is that I don't think the budget would have been huge for it.

Box office money lists just don't do it for me. Most of what is on them are films I'll never see and films I enjoy really have a hard time getting on them. I still judge things by directors and which ones have a picture coming out this year. This is a good year for me because there is a P.T. Anderson film, a Wes Anderson film, a Coen film, an Aronofsky film, a Mission Impossible film, a del Toro film, etc.

So, if I get some films I am interested in, I'm happy. I don't much expect to see most of them on a box office money list, just the sad truth, but 2025 stacks up as a good year for me.
