they can be sure that they'll both make less money.
I guess the thinking must be that there is usually so much moviegoing between Christmas and New Year's Day that families will make time for both movies. Maybe some people will. But I still don't see the benefit of opening those two films against each other when this weekend could easily have supported one of them opening earlier.

I definitely think that some people will see both movies but I have to imagine that a $100-ish or more trip (tickets and concessions) for a family to go to the movies is not happening twice in a week & a half for a large number of people. Even if it's not a financial issue, going to the movies twice in that small window of time is probably not something that most families would do. Spread those $100 trips out over multiple months and I'm sure that more people would have done it.

Moana and Wicked still going strong, terrible showing for Kraven but at least it's budget was on the low end for a comic book movie.

And still INTERSTELLAR has the highest per screen average in the top 10. Amazing.

'Interstellar' Breaks Box Office Records as Christopher Nolan's Sci-Fi Classic Becomes Highest Grossing IMAX Re-Release of All Time

Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar is continuing its stellar run, leading the IMAX box office yet again. Paramount and IMAX have capitalized on overwhelming demand from the viewing public for the sci-fi epic by expanding the domestic IMAX screen count to 320 this weekend, which helped gross an impressive $3.5 million domestically and $3.75 million globally. The 10-day domestic re-release total now stands at an extraordinary $10.8 million and helped it cross a huge milestone as the 2024 anniversary run has officially become the highest-grossing IMAX re-release of all time, amassing a stunning $17.4 million this year alone. On a global scale, the re-release has lifted the film’s lifetime worldwide IMAX total to $132.3 million, making it the 8th highest-grossing IMAX release ever.

Thursday previews were $6.5 million for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 (a franchise best) and $3.3 million for Mufasa.

Sonic 3 is expected to win the weekend with $60-70 million, with Mufasa closer to $50 million.

Mufasa's actually now only expected to do 35m. Complete wet fart for the Mouse House after a year of nothing but wins.

Not like I care. Go Child of Mobius! Crush that lion harder than that stampede of wildebeasts did!

It seems like audiences just aren't that interested in Mufasa but it's still tough to believe that Disney wouldn't have done better if they hadn't released the movie against Sonic. I'd even say that maybe people were preoccupied with getting ready for the holidays this weekend and maybe Mufasa will pick up a bit when kids are off at Christmas time but Sonic is already doing very well this weekend so it doesn't seem like Mufasa is doing lackluster due to the date.

Mufasa was originally supposed to go in July before the strikes last year pushed it to December. Between the two, I'm pretty sure Sonic had the date first. At one point, I think Disney was supposed to have an Avatar this year. That one would have been able to dominate against Sonic. But not Mufasa, which overlaps more with the intended family audience for Sonic. Like I said, one of the two should have gone last weekend.

Incidentally, Disney has a similar release date situation next summer. The next Pixar film, Elio, is scheduled for Friday, June 13, 2025 (June 12 if you count the customary Thursday "previews.") This is Pixar's traditional mid-June slot which I'm sure they are reluctant to give up.

The issue is that Universal scheduled the live-action remake of How to Train Your Dragon for the same day. Disney had the date booked first, but that doesn't really matter. How to Train Your Dragon and a Pixar production have basically a total overlap in terms of their target audience. No matter which one opens on top, they will eat into each other's business if they both stick to that date.

We saw this summer that Inside Out 2 and Despicable Me were able to coexist successfully, but they didn't open on the same day. Inside Out 2 had been playing for three weeks and absorbed a lot of demand during that time before Despicable Me arrived. I think it will be a bigger issue for Disney and Universal to open their big event family films on the exact same date next summer and one of them should move to give themselves a buffer. But, so far, neither one wants to blink.

Back to the films currently at hand: The Lion King original is one of my favorite movies of all time. I hate the remake. So I was never going to see Mufasa. Other people obviously felt differently about the remake because it wouldn't have gotten to a $1.6 billion worldwide gross if no one liked it. So of course Disney would want to make some sort of follow-up film. But even if I am in the minority on the remake, I'm not sure who was asking for a Mufasa and Scar origin story prequel. The original film gives you everything you need to know about their relationship. So I'm not sure why this film in particular is the follow-up Disney greenlit instead of some other pitch.

The War of the Rohirrim which came out last week isn't even on that chart. Either The Numbers made an error in excluding it or WB hasn't reported a gross for it this weekend. Either one of those scenarios is odd. I expected it to fall off considerably, but it should still have made enough to make the chart. Right?

Wasn't that show deemed a money failure?
