And theaters give thanks for the arrival of more tentpole sequels and adaptations of well-loved IP so they can clear out those pesky original films that not many will buy a ticket to see and for which there are no popcorn bucket tie-ins. ;)

Here, directed by Robert Zemeckis and starring Tom Hanks, has so far grossed only $13 million worldwide compared an estimated budget before advertising and overhead of about $50 million. Needless to say Here has a lot of red rink. I like most of RZ's movies a lot, but this one was not my cup of tea, and at this point he's had a fairly long list of box office disappointments. I hope RZ can achieve commercial and critical success with his next movie.

One of my favorites among RZ's recent movies is Allied, a grim and yet spectacular and action-packed World War II drama that I have on 4K, and which I've watched every year for the past few years.

Zemeckis will always have my respect for Back to the Future in particular, and he is obviously extremely skilled. His contributions the art form are significant and can't be discounted, but he is also extremely inconsistent. I think "critical" is especially important when you're talking about movies aimed at adults, which is most of Zemeckis' dramas. Generally speaking, older audiences seem likely to pay attention to reviews, and the reviews for Here just weren't good. Something like Moana 2 (which had much more mixed reviews than its predecessor) is review-proof because kids love it and just want to spend more time with the character. Here is going for a very different section of the audience which is more discerning.

One of my favorites among RZ's recent movies is Allied
I liked that movie, but I think it would have benefited from being structured slightly differently.

On another box office related note, I guessed earlier:

Interstellar is likely to be on the whole IMAX-branded footprint.
Wrong. The fake IMAX locally (which I boycott anyway because it's in AMC) has booked Wicked this weekend. Paramount had originally announced Interstellar as a wide re-release when it had been scheduled for September. Then, someone decided to scale it back to IMAX only, and now it's not even all IMAX locations. I think they are leaving some money on the table by not putting this film wider. There are lots of Nolan fans who don't live near one of the limited release theaters. A wide re-release would not have behaved like a new movie, but I think it would have made something, and certainly more than the limited release will.

Wicked will obviously continue to do very well for the premium locations where it is booked, and the theaters showing it won't have a problem filling seats. But especially on a pretty quiet weekend as far as new releases go, I would have been happy to go see Interstellar in a theater again if it had come out as the wide re-release originally announced. I guess I'll watch my Blu-ray instead. But the studio won't get any additional money from that because I've owned it for nine years.

I liked Here more than you but I did almost laugh out loud when the movie started at the dawn of time. It's not like it was a massive sequence but it still seemed like a completely unnecessary expenditure but I guess they figured that a relatively low budget and Tom Hanks guaranteed a profit.

As for Zemeckis, Allied is pretty good but I really loved The Walk which is probably my favorite of his movies since the BTTFs.

PARAMOUNT
Doing double the amount of business than Y2K is Paramount’s Imax re-release of Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar with $4.1M at 165 locations with a massive $24,8K theater average, arguably the best domestic re-release (non-awards related) start for the filmmaker. We often hear news about Nolan re-releases in Imax (i.e. Tenet), but then there aren’t any grosses reported. It pays to double down on Nolan re-releases, because clearly there’s some sort of business here.

Interstellar is doing great especially for my local IMAX only showing it twice a day (Moana 2) gets the matinees. I was going to see Interstellar tomorrow but the seating chart looks like the crowd will be too big for me. I guess I will go Tuesday.

Why didn't this go wider again?

I know that IMAX and 70mm are part of the appeal for cinephiles. But if the movie can make this much with so few options for where to see it, I have to think they're leaving money on the table by limiting the size of the release. Interstellar isn't the same kind of movie as Moana 2 or Wicked, so I think a more substantial re-release could have found space in the marketplace right now. Are they afraid of taking away business from Gladiator II?

Oh well.

Given the interest and demand for this re-release, I’d have to say Interstellar is one of the most sought-after IMAX re-releases. I’d guess any Nolan 15/70mm film would be popular, but especially Interstellar. The imagery is spectacular.

Looks like both Wicked and Moana 2 will finish with about $400 million each domestically.

Given that both Kraven and The War of the Rohirrim seem anemic this weekend, I really don't know why Sonic and Mufasa both had to duke it out next weekend. I know that more schools are out next week into the holiday, but still. It seems like one or the other could have gotten ahead by opening this weekend. Either Mufasa or Sonic would have been able to outdo either of this weekend's new releases easily and would have had longer in premium auditoriums if they didn't open the same day competing with each other.

Sure but by opening both at the same time, they can be sure that they'll both make less money. Genius.
