Although I am not a fan of Wicked, I am very much a fan of other musicals that are not Wicked. So I've got to say that it would be great if this debut could shift the industry perception that people don't like musicals. It seems like every time a musical comes out, there's all this editorializing about how the audience at large doesn't like musicals anymore and the genre is either dying or dead. No other genre has to fight for its own existence with every single release. Wicked putting an end to that "debate" would be a service not only to Wicked fans but also to the entire genre as a whole. Even though I'm not interested in this particular film, its opening demonstrates that the audience is still there and will respond to a musical if they really like it, the same way any other genre works. The press will probably see Wicked as an aberration, though. I guess we'l see what happens whenever the next live-action musical that's not Wicked Part 2 opens. (Of course, Moana 2 is opening in two days and it is a musical as well, but the press seems to put Disney animated musicals in a different category.)

I doubt it, as aside from Wicked and Wonka, most other high-profile non-animated/non-Disney musicals have largely failed over the past few years: West Side Story, In the Heights, The Color Purple, Dear Evan Hanson, Mean Girls, Joker: Folie a Deux, Cats. That's only about a 25% chance of success in the genre even if you make a great film. Even the Disney name doesn't always guarantee success, seen with Dumbo, Encanto, and Wish, which all did kind of OK, but still lost money.

The occasional success story is not likely to change the overall perception. That would take a string of sustained successes.

Moana II is also coming out in a couple of days, if that hits big and Wicked doesn't plummet in the box office that could be good news for musicals.

It came out first, was released ultra-wide, and locked up screens for two week minimum. Only so many screens to go around when there are multiple tentpole movies to be shown at the same time (we've had two theaters close, loss of 14 screens, in my area in the past year). It will be interesting to see what happens with the premium screens when Moana 2 joins the mix on Wednesday. Not sure who will have the upper hand contractually.

Possibly, but that's another Disney musical which is usually an outlier when compared to other studios' musicals.

YMMV but at my local theater, Moana takes over the premium screen beginning Tuesday at 2pm. (With Wednesday being the "official" opening day, the so-called "previews" are Tuesday.) It looks like Wicked will have it for a single late night show after that, but Moana is getting all of the earlier showtimes. Gladiator, which was splitting the premium screen with Wicked this weekend, gets bounced off of it altogether.

Looks about the same here. We only have one PLF in the area. Split with Gladiator 2 and Wicked this weekend, but starting Wednesday it's Moana 2 and Wicked.

Last year on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, I went to see Wish in the local premium auditorium and I was the only person there. They seem to have learned from that and are keeping Wicked for the last night show slot while Moana has everything else. Of course, a late night Wicked show will actually get out early in the morning on the next day because of its length.

My guess is that Wicked will regain some premium screen slots after the holiday weekend. Nothing of note opens on the 6th and maybe even the 13th (Kraven?).

Kraven and LOTR: Rohirrim are expected to get releases in IMAX and PLF's starting on 12/13, so the current batch has a couple of weeks to play until then.

Interstellar opens on the 6th and practically all the shows are sold out.

You're right, but there is a caveat. This was originally announced as a wide re-release, but they've since scaled it back to being IMAX theaters only. This leaves out other premium auditoriums, like the Cinemark XD that I use and Regal's "RPX" format, because they're not part of IMAX. I suspect that Moana 2 (maybe split with Wicked at night) will probably keep those screens for the weekend of the 6th while Interstellar is likely to be on the whole IMAX-branded footprint.

Kraven and LOTR: Rohirrim are expected to get releases in IMAX and PLF's starting on 12/13
I'm curious how they plan to divide up the limited number of premium screens between these two. There will be a similar situation on December 20 with Sonic and (ugh) Mufasa on the same day.

It would be up to the theaters for the non-IMAX PLF screens. I think they have more control over those as they are not a proprietary franchised format like IMAX. But IMAX shows new engagements available every week on the upcoming schedule (below, from the-numbers.com). I'm not sure if IMAX screens are contracted between the studios and IMAX, or if the theaters have some level of control over what's shown? I'm guessing they can probably choose the films they want in their building as long as it's an IMAX-sanctioned offering.

Interstellar is the only film that interests me from that list. I’m seeing it at least twice in IMAX.

I don't have any inside information on contracts or anything, so I could be way off here. But I do think there's reason to suspect that IMAX corporate makes those calls. Joker 2 was given a guaranteed three-week window in IMAX because part of it was shot with IMAX cameras. I'm sure a lot of theater owners would have liked to drop it off the IMAX screens sooner than that due to its poor performance, but I don't think they were allowed to do that.

Ten years ago, Mockingjay Part 1 was the only Hunger Games movie that didn't get an IMAX release even though the others had done well for them. That was because IMAX was committed to showing Interstellar for a long time during the run of Mockingjay because of a deal with Paramount and Nolan. Interstellar got a long window guaranteed because Nolan used IMAX cameras to shoot it. Mockingjay came out something like two weeks after Interstellar so the IMAX screens were unavailable to it.

There was also an incident in 2009 when Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince came out. IMAX was unable to schedule Half-Blood Prince at all for the first two weeks of its theatrical run because they had already promised those screens to a Transformers movie. WB ran into this problem because Half-Blood Prince had originally been scheduled for November 2008, when they could have had the IMAX screens to themselves. But they decided to push it to July 2009 because the 2007-8 writers strike left them without a summer 2009 tentpole release. So Half-Blood Prince opened only in regular theaters and then added IMAX two weeks into its run after the commitment to Transformers had ended.

Re: Wicked

My wife and I have just returned from a trip to London (UK) and Paris. Wicked seemed to be everywhere in London. So the marketing machine is going all out.

Including this castle inside a train station (St Pancras International).
