Incidentally, I saw Inside Out 2 again on Saturday. It is now tucked away in one of the smaller auditoriums, but there were 25 or so people there. That might not sound like much, but the only movie I've seen recently that had a bigger crowd was Deadpool and Wolverine last week. I suspect the theater is still very glad to have it drawing that many people for a movie that came out in June.
If someone had told me at the beginning of June that Inside Out 2 was (probably) going to make more money than Barbie, I'd have called the cops on them. Don't get me wrong, IO2 was always a guaranteed hit but I doubt that anyone expected it to be that successful.

It seems like Pixar sequels that are long-awaited tend to do exceptionally well and people are always surprised when they "overperform." Toy Story 3, Finding Dory and Incredibles 2 broke all kinds of records when they were new. Like those, Inside Out 2 benefited from being the sequel to an especially well-liked first film with characters the audience was excited to see again after a long absence. And, of course, it really delivered the goods as an entertaining and substantial follow-up. They made this because they found another story worth telling, so audiences are leaving satisfied, and the studio being rewarded with tons of money. I don't think they would have had this result if they had just pumped out another one for the sake of making another one, like with the Cars sequels and Monsters University.

I would reverse that. If someone had told me in 2022 that a Barbie film would compete with a Pixar film for worldwide box office take, I would have looked at them like they were crazy.

Most of the entire east coast will be dealing with whatever happens with Hurricane Debby, so that will also probably lower grosses in general.

Reports have early box office tracking for the film with an opening in the $10-20 million range.

I mostly said that about Borderlands because my closest AMC theater has it playing in their smallest sized theater, and just a few showings daily. Deadpool and Wolverine is still playing in the Dolby Cinema theater for its 3rd weekend straight, which is an anomaly in the summer, but it's making bank still, so it stays on the DC screen.

Inside Out 2 has now ticked past Barbie in total domestic earnings and sits at #11 all-time domestic unadjusted. It needs about another $16 million or so to pass Jurassic World for #10.

I don't think that is completely impossible, but the last $16 million is probably the hardest. Disney's decision to release it for home purchase on August 20 will probably further dim its remaining box office prospects.

If it settles out and stays at #11, there would be some irony in it closing just under Jurassic World. JW is the reason that the original Inside Out became the first Pixar film not to open #1 at the box office.

Twisters seems like it's been a fairly big hit, but since it reportedly cost more than $150 million, and so far has a worldwide box office of $310 million, it seems like it's breakeven at best. The international box office seems weak for Twisters so far, but perhaps there are some markets where it hasn't yet been released. The original Twister 28 years ago was a c.$90 million dollar movie that did nearly $500 million worldwide.

I don't think there are any major markets remaining, other than maybe Japan and South Korea, but those would only add a few million. It just seems to be struggling internationally compared to the first film.

1 and 2 at the box office with Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively.
Not to mention that Lively has a cameo in Deadpool and Wolverine, so she's technically in both of the top two films.

Deadpool and Wolverine is still playing in the Dolby Cinema theater for its 3rd weekend straight
My local theater has Deadpool on its premium screen until Thursday, when it will be switched out for Alien. So Disney is taking the premium screen away from one of its inherited Fox properties and giving it to another of its inherited Fox properties.

Maybe the disaster genre doesn't move international audiences the way it did back then. And it is a very U.S.-focused story, not a global disaster, so that could be a factor.

I love Coraline and I would jump at the chance to see it in theaters again at normal prices. But it is being priced at $15 for 2D and $20 for 3D as a flat rate for all shows regardless of time of day or type of ticket. That is significantly higher than any other movie, even though it is a 15-year-old movie which is widely available at home. I am willing to go to re-releases of movies that I own. I went to The Lion King last month when it was priced the same as any other new release and was happy to pay for that again. But I can't justify paying so much more, so I regrettably skipped Coraline.

It is possible that $15 or $20 would be looked at as discounts in high-priced markets like New York or LA, but not for me.

Because of Coraline's price, its grosses as reflected in the charts may not mean it reached the same number of audience members this weekend as the films around it did.

Coraline release is through Fathom Events. Those are usually priced at a premium flat rate with no discounts.

Yep, otherwise, I'd go w/ my AMC A-List. Not interested nearly enough to shell out $20 (that my paid sub won't cover at all, except maybe the convenience fee) to see it in theater. My own 120" FP setup is plenty enough for this movie methinks... though I still haven't gotten 3D glasses, if I ever wanna see it in 3D -- that might be the only incentive for me to see it in theater, which is very minor for me (though I am curious at least for this title)....
