A boy of relevant trivia to this thread I just discovered.

During the time of Shakespeare, in his plays a boy would stand with a box to take coins.

Once the box got heavy, he would switch it with an empty box in a little room.

This was called the Box Office.

🤪

I love etymology.

I was literally the only person in the entire auditorium when I went to The Lion King this weekend. I didn't do anything book a private screening; it just happened that no one else came.

Disney probably doesn't care too much what it makes because The Lion King has already made tons of money previously, so anything it gets now is just gravy. And Inside Out 2 is still chugging along making lots of money right now. But it is unfortunate that the re-release didn't do better because it makes future re-releases of their classic animated titles even less likely than they already were.

Oh well. It was still an absolute pleasure to see The Lion King in a theater again, and there were no screaming children to interrupt my enjoyment. I hope this release is not the last time in my life that I will be able to do so.

I don't think there was much promotion? I didn't know there was any re-release until I read it somewhere on this forum.

Still, it made the Top 10 for the weekend.

In more "budgets are out of control" news, Fly Me To the Moon reportedly cost $100 million to make. For a rom-com. Starring Channing Tatum.

I knew it was coming but I didn't know it was this weekend.

I'm guessing the blame lies on it being a period piece and the undoubtedly massive paychecks for Apple to get Johansson and Tatum.

I didn't pay attention to that, but does this mean it'll end up an AppleTV+ exclusive w/ no disc release? Not that I'd all that likely want it on disc...

I was planning to likely see it as part of my 3-movie AMC A-List marathon either tomorrow or Wed... IF I actually brave this NYC area heatwave, LOL -- it's really mainly the hot mess of the subways I'd be braving, heh...

Most likely, as it was originally supposed to premiere on A+ but Apple decided to give it a theatrical release after some good test screenings. Once it's done in theaters, it'll probably be exclusive to A+.

I imagine it'll still also be on iTunes for rent/purchase as seems their norm, which might be ok enough for me, if I find I enjoy it enough -- doesn't seem likely I'd love it enough to pine for a disc release, heh...

Anyone know what's with The Fall Guy this weekend? It dropped 127 screens but the gross increased 116% over last weekend.
Dan Murrell, a critic on YouTube, addressed this on his box office show today. Apparently Universal attached The Fall Guy to Despicable Me 4 for double feature screenings at drive-ins. So when people showed up to see Despicable Me 4 at these locations, part of their ticket cost was counted for The Fall Guy whether they actually stayed to watch it or not. See about 20 minutes into the video for this discussion.

I don't think there was much promotion? I didn't know there was any re-release until I read it somewhere on this forum.
Disney printed some new posters (I saw one hanging at my local theater) and posted about it on their social media accounts. Otherwise, I don't think they did anything. However, this is basically the same strategy they used for the re-release of The Phantom Menace earlier this summer and that made substantially more money despite being a worse movie. (Yes, I know it's Star Wars, but it's a Star Wars that a portion of the fans for that series don't like.)

And the final number for the weekend for this film was $9.4 million, down 6% from the Sunday estimate ($10 million).

My mom and I saw Fly Me To The Moon today, we were the only people in the theater. We both enjoyed the movie but they could have easily trimmed 20 - 30 minutes.

That’s a helluva spectacular $80 million opening for Twisters when tracking had it at $50 million. Wow. 😱
