Bad Boys For Life was released in January 2020. My moviegoing habits were still the old version of normal then. Covid seemed remote, like something that was happening in other parts of the world. I didn't really have a sense of how drastically it was going to upend day-to-day life until March when everything started closing down.

By virtue of its release date, I think Bad Boys probably still made the vast majority of whatever it was going to if the pandemic never happened. Due to the subsequent closures, it was also the #1 highest-grossing film of 2020. That isn't a traditional reason to hold a record, but it is a record the movie owns nonetheless. Films like Portrait of a Lady On Fire and Onward, which opened in February and March, seem to have been much more impacted because they had less time to screen before theaters closed.

Sony, and more importantly movie theater owners, should be happy with the opening for the new Bad Boys too. Hopefully the box office keeps up this momentum with Inside Out 2 this upcoming weekend.

That makes me wonder who went to see Fellowship but not Two Towers. It wasn't convenient for me to go this weekend. But if I had, I would want to see all three. I can't imagine choosing between the LOTR installments because they are so much one big story.

In my case I have to work on Saturdays so Fellowship was out. So I went to just The Two Towers last night and am going to Return of the King tonight.

Fellowship is my favorite movie of the series so if that is true for other people they could decide to just see that.

I think running them on consecutive days was a mistake. For me, I'd love to go see them, but it's an hour's drive to the theater showing them and I'm not making that drive three days in a row. If they'd release them on consecutive weekends instead of consecutive days, I'd be inclined to make the trip once a week. They could also spread out the demand and sell more tix by running shows Fri/Sat/Sun each week.

It's also a lot of money for some to spend in one weekend, especially if they're paying for a family to go. I know Fathom tix are more expensive at this theater than regular attendance, and not usually subject to any discounts.

Yeah, that's sorta why I'd also want something at least closer to a premium screen for something like this... otherwise, I already have a good, large FP setup and good audio for my 4K discs at home...

I get why they wouldn't get a Dolby or IMAX screen for this, but at least give me AMC Prime or the like for instance, if I can't use my A-List subs, heh... Not like there's a ton of new, more deserving movies out right now, heh...

The Return of the King is 4 hours and 23 minutes in its extended format, not counting travel time and any movie theater pre-show advertisements that might be included. It is a great movie but is also a big chunk of anyone's day. The fact that it could make that much on a Monday, which is a workday followed by another workday for many people is really impressive.

Good for Pixar. Good for the movie.

There's been a lot of doom and gloom this summer about the box office being down. This is more proof that a lot of people are still willing to come out for the right movie. It has to be something they really want to see, and it has to be really good. But it is still happening.

We saw it earlier this year when the first couple of months were really sleepy and then Dune and Godzilla Kong woke things up in March. Now, we'v had another period where the last couple months were sleepy. Inside Out (and Bad Boys last week) are waking things up.

When you have movies people want to see, people go to the movies. What a novel concept.

Been to 2 different AMC movie theaters tonight and yesterday night (Monday/Tuesday), and I was surprised by the amount of theater-goers at each theater location, guess summer flicks are in full swing with IO2, BB4 bringing in most of the folks for the month of June.
