I am trying to look at teams that may show dramatic improvement in 2025.

First up, the New England Patriots. Yes, they could be back to being competitive this season. Essentially, the Patriots upgraded everywhere. From bringing in Vrabel at HC to free agency and the draft, they have rebuilt this team. The continuing development of Drake Maye will be key, but he now has a supporting cast around him. Within the division, I think the Patriots are now set to go toe to toe with the Dolphins and Jets and could finish above both and be in a position to score a Wildcard birth. They don't look to be up to the task of knocking off the Bills for the division crown, but this team could very well surprise a lot of people. Vrabel has already changed the culture in the building, Josh McDaniels is back running the offense, they significantly improved at WR, OL, and RB. Watch out for this team in 2025.

A few of QB notes.

Yesterday I heard on NFL radio that the guy currently penciled in at the top of the Colts depth chart at QB is Daniel Jones. I mean, that means nothing, the claim was it is a competition, an open chance for Jones or Richardson to win the job. Here is the thing though, according to what I heard discussed, the Colts want Jones to win the job. That is what they would prefer. It just seems they are done with Richardson, and the kid won't be with the team in 2026. Could he win the job? Sure, he could but I think the Colts brass is stacking the deck against him. The Colts are said to want to go into the season with Jones as their starting QB.

The most closely watched QB competition in the league will be the Browns. Money is on Flacco will start, Pickett will back him up but that could flip, and one of the two rookies takes the QB3 spot. Right now, and it is early, Shedeur Sanders looks to be ahead of Dillon Gabriel. Gabriel, it is said at the moment, has looked a bit disappointing. I watched some video of Sanders throwing in practice. He looked, to me, average but I don't know how hard they are going at it in this early camp stuff. He threw short stuff mostly well, got a bit sketchy when he tried to make throws further downfield. He threw some balls into the ground and missed receivers several times. Some of his deeper passes he floated, putting a lot of air under them and he does look to lack zip on the ball. He could be an interception machine at the pro level. My guess is, Flacco and Pickett will throw the ball better than that and with more consistency.

The Saints openly said they do not want Aaron Rodgers. So, their QB competition is going to be between Spencer Rattler and Tyler Shough and the surprise here is...Shough is the favorite to win the job. Meaning, he is the preferred option all he has to do is not screw up his opportunity. So, it is likely Shough trots onto the field in the Saints opening game. We'll see how he does in camp and preseason, but I think the Saints are leaning toward starting him right away.

On a side note to the Saints QB situation, yes, Derek Carr retired but word is he is already talking to teams about coming out of retirement...to play somewhere other than New Orleans. Probably not this season, but don't be surprised if Carr attempts a comeback in 2026.

Colts owner Jim Irsay passed away. He was 65.

Did he have immediate family that will inherit the team (wife, sons, daughters)?

So interesting news out of Browns OTA's, Joe Flacco is easily the best QB they have in terms of performance, this is not a surprise. The good news for Shedeur Sanders is, he has been the second best QB, beating out his fellow rookie Gabriel and Kenny Pickett. So, Sanders has not been great but he has been better than the other two guys as word on them has been they have been just awful. If this is the case, Sanders could make the roster as the back-up to Flacco, which means he likely would start some games as Flacco probably would not make it through all 17 games as the starter.

The assessment on Gabriel is he does not in any way look like an NFL QB, so my bet is he gets cut. Pickett is said to have been a major disappointment as the HC was hoping he would be their starter. Pickett probably makes the roster but if Sanders continues to be the second best guy through the preseason he will be the back-up. My guess is they keep Pickett around as insurance.

Looks like it is Flacco's job as long as he stays healthy.

I should be clear on what is being said, Sanders is the second best QB but the drop-off from Flacco is gigantic. Flacco easily has the best arm, best grasp of running an offense, and is a team leader. Sanders has not been great, he's just been better than Gabriel and Pickett who have been terrible. Only one of the rookies will make the roster and it seems obvious, they say, it will be Sanders. His flaws are obvious is what is being reported but all Gabriel and Pickett have done is cement a roster spot for Sanders.

They have to get through preseason and my guess would be Sanders will start the first couple preseason games and/or get a lot of playing time.

Apparently it has been made clear what Brian Daboll must do to keep his job beyond this season. He has to win a minimum of 7 games and get Jaxson Dart on the field starting at least some games late in the season. If the team shows that progress and Dart looks like he is making strides to take over at QB in 2026, Daboll sticks around. If he fails to meet those standards, well, he is likely going to be moving on.

They have a difficult schedule, so it’s going to be tough on them to win 7.

Which is why the Giants have terrible ownership. If you're going to fire the guy, then fire him. There is no way in hell, the Giants are winning seven games this season with that schedule. They'll be the favorites in only 2-3 of their 17 games.

Giants have a 5.5 win total and a 4.7% of making the playoffs based on projections from The Athletic. Only the Browns are lower with 5.4 and 3.6%. Some Giants fans (not rational ones) think they will be competitive based on their newly augmented defense and that Jaxson Dart will somehow be blessed by the gods.

this is behind a paywall for some:

If the Giants win 5 games this season, then they've made progress.

That looks like a brutal schedule and yes, if I am playing the win/loss game with it, I think they may have an outside chance at 6 wins if the team plays really well. However, if Dart is starting the last 3 or 4 games, they may at best have a 4 win season. It is rough, no doubt.

Well, I would give them a shot at the two games against the Cowboys (in reality if they split with the Cowboys that's good), the Saints are predicted to be one of the worst teams in the league this season so I will give them a win there, I give them a chance at beating the Bears, Patriots, and Raiders. So, that's where I would find the 6 but granted, it is not an easy 6. Plus there is always a surprise win where they beat a team they should lose to. I think Vegas have the odds correct at 5.5 wins because yes, they have that outside shot at 6 wins but betting the under seems safer.

Daboll has the most talent he has yet had and he did get them to overperform in his first season. So, I think the 6 win thing is a possibility but squeezing out the 7th win, that looks hard.

I'm a Giants fan but I'm not that optimistic.

They will likely go 1-7 in their division (maybe 2 wins if in the last game of the season Dallas is resting players and even that isn't a guarantee.) And at best 3-4 wins for the rest of their schedule.
