‘Avatar: The Way Of Water’ Scores Monday January Record With $21M+, 4-Day Rises To $88M, Looks To Best Blumhouse’s ‘M3GAN’ Opening – Tuesday AM Update

TUESDAY AM UPDATE: .20th Century Studios/Lightstorm/Disney’s Avatar: The Way of Water came out of New Year’s weekend on a roll scoring the best January Monday ever with $21.1M, ahead of American Sniper‘s Jan. 19 day back in 2015 of $17.9M. The 4-day run was $88M for the James Cameron directed sequel, -8% from its 4-day Christmas weekend, with a running total of $446.1M, 1% ahead of its comp Rogue One: A Star Wars Story through its first 18 days. It’s also ahead of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever‘s eight weekend running total of $439.5M.

Industry estimates believe that Avatar 2‘s fourth weekend will be between $25M-$30M beating new wide release, Universal/Blumhouse’s PG-13 genre titleM3GAN which is looking at $17M, despite tracking have that film higher in the lower $20Ms. Showtimes start Thursday at 5PM. Young females under 25 are the prime demo.

Avatar 2‘s Monday is well ahead of Rogue One‘s $15.9M January 2 Monday (back in 2017) and 34% ahead of its 4-day of $65.5M. Avatar 2‘s Monday beats the first January Monday of Spider-Man: No Way Home ($7.9M), Force Awakens ($8M) and Last Jedi ($14.2M). Global is at $1.44 billion.

Now comes the real test of its legs as the holidays are over and box office returns to normal
Grosses.

How high can ATWOW go? I’ll say $600 million domestic and $2 billion world wide.

Cameron will then be (I believe) the 1st director to have 3 consecutive films with over $600m domestic (ignoring inflation adjustments) on initial release!

And the 1st director to have 3 consecutive films with over $2 billion global counting re-releases.

Tino, that'd be my guess as well. It's a relatively long few weeks until Ant-Man 2, so I agree that $600M domestic and $2B global sound about right. Still, they're in the black, proof of concept validated, technology improvements achieved, and ready to move forward with the real success.

I do think Megan will do a respectable business and better than they're predicting but I also think Avatar will clear $30 million. That being said, what the hell do I know?
You know, again anecdotally, I just looked at M3gan seats sold and most shows are pretty much empty. Might be another Snakes On A Plane scenario.

I think Megan will do fine for a relatively inexpensive movie and I believe it's PG-13 so teens, who probably don't buy tickets that early, will be a very large component of the movie's crowd.

Personally, I think Megan looks like shit so unless the reviews are good, I'm not seeing it. And I can see stuff for free.

‘Avatar: The Way Of Water’ Tops $1.5B Global, Becomes No. 10 Highest-Grossing Film Of All Time WW

THURSDAY UPDATE: James Cameron’s Avatar: The Way of Water, as expected (see below), has exceeded $1.5B globally with Wednesday’s figures included. The running total through yesterday is $1,516.5M, meaning that it has overtaken Top Gun: Maverick as the No. 1 worldwide release of 2022. What’s more, it is now the No. 10 biggest movie ever globally.

The 20th Century Studios/Disney sci-fi epic has also in the past day crossed Furious 7 worldwide. Today, it will pass The Avengers to claim the No. 9 spot on the all-time global chart.

Internationally, it is the No. 9 biggest movie ever, and, in Europe, is the highest-grosser of the pandemic era (having passed Spider-Man: No Way Home). It is also the No. 5 release of all time for the region.

‘M3GAN’ Making Moola With $26M+; ‘Avatar: The Way Of Water’ To Cross Half Billion At Domestic Box Office – Friday PM Update

FRIDAY PM: For an early January weekend falling after New Year’s Day and before MLK, it’s sure not sleepy. Some adult films may have a hard time working at the box office as moviegoing comes out of the pandemic, but you can bet the house on horror films. Universal has a vibrant No. 2 winner in Blumhouse’s creepy posh doll film M3GAN which is looking at a $26.7M opening after a $11.4M Friday (plus previews) at 3,509 theaters. The Gerard Johnstone directed PG-13 horror movie has landed at 94% certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes with critics and a current audience score of 78%. This movie is in such great shape, they’re already kicking around ideas about a sequel for it, I hear.

‘M3GAN’ Making Moola With $27M+; ‘Avatar: The Way Of Water’ To Cross Half Billion At Domestic Box Office – Saturday AM Update

SATURDAY AM UPDATE: Refresh for more and for chart Universal/Blumhouse’s M3GAN won Friday with $11.7M taking its weekend projections to $27.5M. Marvelous. Hopefully the horror fans don’t have this front loaded. CinemaScore at a solid B (horror fan are always hard) is very good and higher than the 3 1/2 stars on Comscore/Screen Engine’s PostTrak. Universal did a spectacular job here making a creepy doll film for the TikTok generation. If someone is dancing in your movie, and you can market it on TikTok, considering it a win. The protag’s droopy dance caught on like wild fire out of the first trailer — and this was without the studio doing a #MeganDanceChallenage. There was none of that. It was all organic.

All of this culminated into 1.3 billion views on TikTok for the Blumhouse title across the hashtags #M3GAN, #M3GANMovie and #M3GANDance.

Universal took that whole dance conceit up a notch by having a dance troupe of M3GAN dolls at the premiere before Christmas dancing to Taylor Swift’s “It’s Nice to Have a Friend”. That gang came out for the Rams game at half time last weekend and cut the rug again. Great gimmick marketing that sells a horror film and makes it a must-see. Paramount did a stunt for Smile but with scary smiling people stunt at sports games which TV cameras would capture and zoom in on.

Disney’s Avatar: The Way of Water is still looking at No,. 1 with $38M-$43M weekend, which at either end, gets it over the half billion mark in U.S. and Canada.

Both movies top off a weekend that’s bound to add up to around $101M for all titles, +61% from Jan. 7-9 a year ago which made $62.7M per Box Office Mojo.

‘M3GAN’ Slays With $30M+ Opening; ‘Avatar: The Way Of Water’ Hits Half Billion Faster Than ‘Top Gun 2’, ‘Rogue One’ – Sunday AM Box Office Update

EARLY SUNDAY AM UPDATE: Refresh for updates and chart Universal/Blumhouse/Atomic Monster’s M3GAN is a monster at the box office and is opening to $30.2M after a rich Saturday of $11.4M, just -3% off from Friday $11.7M Friday and previews. What a great late Christmas present for exhibition as this one will have legs and give some extra bounce to the box office as we wait for Ant-Man and Wasp: Quantumania over Presidents Day weekend. Also, Avatar: The Way of Water crossed the half billion mark yesterday in its 23rd day of release after an estimated $20M Saturday. That’s faster than Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (32 days) and Top Gun: Maverick (30 days).

Disney is reporting weekend 4 for Avatar 2 at $45M. Exhibition made a four week pact with Disney to keep the sequel on Imax, PLF, Dolby screens. They’d be crazy to pull them off with the pic making so much money. At this level, Avatar 2 saw the second best 4th weekend for a film after the original 2009 film which posted $50.3M. The pic is at $1.7 billion global.

$45m for a non-holiday 4th weekend? Impressive.

I think it again beat initial predictions for somewhere around $35m.

Most everything over-performed projections this weekend. The Numbers was calling for a total combined weekend of around $70 million, and it's coming in around $104 million. Lots more people going to the movies than expected, and seeing a variety of films.

What else would they put on those screens? "Plane"?

Nothing that seems to have much real box office prospects coming out MLK weekend.

It'd make no sense to bump the #1 movie in the US for something else - unless another actual tentpole was coming.
