Looks like "GvK" will become the 1st $100 million COVID-era movie in the US!

Given that "King of the Monsters" only made $110m 2 years ago in "normal times", that's pretty good!

I think a real case is being made that there’s very little overlap between those who want to see a film in theaters vs those who prefer to watch at home. If the home viewing market truly canabalized the theatrical market, Godzilla vs Kong would have been DOA. Instead, it’s doing business that’s about on par with its predecessor, released prior to the pandemic.

I agree with you. However, the fact is we don't know what the HBO Max viewership numbers are because WB doesn't have to release those. So I think both sides of the argument can find a way to spin this to suit them. If you're happy that things are available for home viewing, you can say that the home availability didn't doom the box office. If you're a proponent of theatrical exclusivity, you can say that the theatrical numbers might be higher without a home option. Because the HBO Max numbers are not available to the public and therefore we don't know how many people are watching at home, it is impossible to see the full picture.

I think the fact that Black Widow moved works to its advantage. While there are certainly big movies coming out in the next couple months, there's no huge tentpole of that size until F9 in late June. So GvK might hang around for a while as a default huge spectacle movie choice. If Black Widow was staying on Friday, I'd say GvK was dead now. But they lucked out with thet delay.
